I was watching the eclipse and decided i'd give this a go. Never tried shooting the moon before. I should have given up as soon as one of the legs fell off my tripod....lol but here is one of the results.

That's damn good Dave. My final one didn't turn out anywhere near as good as that.

I was about to start a thread and invite all to post their shots. With your permission, we could use this thread ?

Either way's good for me, I took a heap of shots tonight and they turned out pretty well. Too bad I only had a 200mm lens, i sold my 70-300mm lens recently. Great shot Dave, what lens were you using? It seemed so dull in person but on camera it actually looked better.

I grabbed the 50-500 out of the bag to have a go at this.

500mm....:) I tried it with the tele plus 2x TC but was having trouble focusing.

Thanks Dave....I agree that your borders look pretty Mickey Mouse, and that for this type of shot....mine suck :D
I'll set the bar low on this occasion so I'm expecting some great shots from others :o

This first shot is with the 70-300mm IS + Soligor x 1.7 TC showing the beginning of the Eclipse :

28044

Just before the completion (Same Lens set-up):

28045

Total Eclipse with the 70-300mm IS only.

28046

Looking back now, I should have upped the ISO so the shutter speeds could have been faster. Didn't notice the "movement" until looking on the PC later. What the hell, it's only another 4 years before I can try again :p

Interesting note : while we saw the Earth's shadow approach from the bottom of the moon....USA would have seen it approach from the top of the Moon.

Good work guys, was quite a hard ask to get a balance on shutter speed and account for the moon moving

Ill post some up tonight

I also found that I got motion blur with long exposures. I took this over the roof of Bathurst Base Hospital as the eclipse started. It's a pity about the orange cast to the building from the spot-lights, but if I adjust the white balance the moon turns blue rather than red!

1st photo: 70-200 @ 70mm; ISO100, f/6.3, SS8s and tripod mounted
2nd photo: 70-200 @ 200mm; ISO1600, f/4, SS1.3s and tripod mounted

I agree with you there, I tried shooting at ISO 200, the lowest for my camera and there was motion blur. I had to shoot at ISO 800 for best results. I'll be posting some up tonight.

While you guys had an eclipse on the 28th, we had 2 moons on the 27th :D

Some or other planet was clsoe to the moon or something like that, I failed to capture it on camera though, pity :(

Here's my efforts at taking the eclipse. I know I'm not using a canon, but i figured since it's about the eclipse it doesn't matter, and it's just a camera with a different name on it. It was pretty tough with a 200mm lens and 6MP to work with since a lot of cropping had to be done. And at ISO 800 the D70s is pretty noisy.

I think we all agree....a very difficult subject.

I'd like to see Neil Armstrong's "macro" attempts :p:D

Wow, achuang, that 2nd shot is one of the best moon shots I've ever seen. And I don't see any noise, just some kind of rim around some parts of the moon, could be from sharpening/resizing. Anyway, great shot.

Thanks toriaj, i took a few and thought this one was a bit bright, but after the eclipse the moon was actually that bright. I haven't seen it that bright before. Normally I take moon shots at 1/160 f5.6-8 or somewhere in that range. But some of them I had to take close to 1/1000 so with something that bright there probably isn't going to be much noise. You can definitely see the noise in my first photo. I recently sold my 70-300 lens, I wish I'd kept it a bit longer to use for the eclipse. You're right, there is a rim around the moon from sharpening. The second moon photo is actually a 100% crop, and that's why I had to do a bit more sharpening on it. I might have to do it again as you said there's a ring around it.

I like the effect of that "partial eclipse" CW. Your settings confirmed what I believe to have been my major downfall. I needed to up the ISO so I could go for a faster shutter speed.

It was a tough gig mate - 1s exposures and all that, too much contrast.

Did anyone else see that little "bug/insect" near the centre of the Moon ?

Apparently it was a Lunar-tic :p :D
