I borrowed a lighting kit. It's pretty easy to use actually one of those strobe deals with a modeling light. I've got a band photo shoot to do tomorrow. I'll post some pictures then.
Not the greatest but pretty good for about half hour work me thinks.
I wish the kit was mine. :o

Nice stuff Nick. I took a studio lighting class but it just wasn't my thing. Maybe I'll revisit it one day.

Thanks guys! here are two from the shoot. Well it's the same pic I just did a B&W conversion on it.

Nick - I really like the shot a lot. I think I am partial to the B&W version. Nice treatment there. I am not certain that the head crop of the front guy works for me though. Was that crop done in camera or PP? I'd enjoy seeing one without the head crop if you have it.

looks good man. you did good posing them. if you didn't wan the dark shadows you could use fill flash from your speedlight. of course, it would be stronger on the first guy and fade as it goes to the last guy. group shots are hard.

Thanks for the comments guys!
I did frame it like that in camera. I do have others that are similar but I don't think they look as interesting. I'll dig some up later. For now though I have a few good copys that I'm going to give to the guys to get printed up to send into a record label.

And here are a few out takes for fun. We had a great time shooting. We would shoot for a half hour then come up to my living room and look at the results on my TV figure out what we liked and didn't like. Then we would go back down and reshoot. It was a good system.
His phone went off. Pff I should have walked out on them! Amateurs!!

I was pretty set on getting a second body as my next big purchase but I think my money is better spent on lighting. It is really amazing what a little light can do. I didn't have nearly enough time to play around with it either. I picked it up Saturday night, and it had to go back at around 8 on Sunday. I had no idea what I was doing! but I'm pleased with the results.
I know there is plenty of room for improvement, but it was great experience. Next time I'll be much better prepared.

Nick - Just personal opinion but I think the non head crop shot is spot on. Really excellent capture, man. I also like the fact that the guys are grouped a little tighter together. Really nice work there.

Thanks! I like that one more too. I think the guys like the other one though. Pfff what do they know!?! :p It was interesting to hear their rationale though.
There are two singers in the band, sorta like the Beatles had dual singers. So it was tough to please both of them, if you know what I mean? ;) They liked the second one because the guy in front covers a lot of the frame but is darker, the other singer is in the center. The both compete well for attention in the frame. The rest of the band is brighter so even though they are in the back they don't fade away.
I like the first one though it's a much better image imo. It fits the name of the band too, "The Second Glance". I didn't intend for that when I was shooting but I like the way it turned out. I think they look like a tighter bunch too.

Interesting argument. I guess the most important part is that you feel comfortable with whatever shot they choose. If you feel strongly that a shot doesn't represent you well then you're probably better served by not letting the client see it in the first place.
BTW, I finally decided to pre-order the 40D. Any decision of your part yet?

Thanks Mike and nqjudo, Those two shots were the only ones I felt comfortable with showing them. They are going to send both of them in to music labels as a part of their press package.
So where did you decide to pre order from? I'm still on the fence as to what I want to upgrade next. I could use a second/new body but I think a lighting kit or an 580 EX II might help improve my photography more. I do have that trip/wedding to go to in Nov and it would be nice to have an extra body with a longer lens like a 85mm 1.8... or the 135mm 2.0.
Too much to get and not enough money to get it with. :(

I finally ordered from Henry's. They only charge the GST (no provincial taxes) when shipping outside of Ontario and with shipping being free, it works out to about 100$ in savings vs. buying locally. You could get the same deal ordering out of province. It's worth it on big ticket items when the shipping free.
You're probably right about your equipment priorities. Your stuff looks pretty good to me. I don't see what a newer body is going to do to make your shots look better. I ordered the 40D mostly out of guilt. I originally bought the XTI for my wife but she can't get her hands on it because it's always hanging around my neck. I find the XTI a little small for my hands and don't like the battery grip. I figured that the release of the 40D, it was time to give the wife her camera back.
