With the impending rollout of the 40d, has anyone noticed if/how much the price for the 30D has dropped?

Yeah, I've been looking. I see that the price for the 30d body is ~$1,000 now, I'm just wondering what it was a month or two ago.

I apologize but I'm not really sure what you are driving at here. The price is exactly what it is today. You're not buying the camera two months ago. A camera is like any consumable. It's going to drop in price till it becomes obsolete. If you buy one today you can be sure that a month or two from now you are going to find it cheaper. What you have to do as a consumer is look at the product today and decide whether or not you find enough value in it to purchase it at the going price. If not, you move to another product or wait till it hits a certain price point.

Obviously he doesn't care for your analysis of market trends, he just wants to know if anyone knows of a specific site or store has dropped the price.
Sometimes a question is a question, and not an invitation to hop on the soapbox.
To the OP:
To my knowledge, from a few quick searches, I have yet to see any discernible difference. Give it some time.
Good luck.

Well, I've seen some on Ebay for under $900.
There's even some pre-sale for the 40D.
We'll see how things are in the coming months.

Well, if it is as you say then the question should be in a place called the 'Hot Deals Forum'. That makes the intention of the question somewhat clearer. Likewise, answers to posts are more often than not sincere attempts to help an individual, and not an open invitation for someone to set up a soapbox of their own. Any individual can ruin anything with bad intentions. I did qualify my answer with an apology and stated that I wasn't sure about the question. Your interpretation of the question may be spot on and your answer may touch the heart of the question exactly and, possibly better than mine. But when it comes to my answer specifically, don't preach to me about soapboxes because in that regard, you are quite full of suds yourself.

Yes, I am fully aware of and comprehend the concept that the price will keep dropping until the inventory levels decline to some nebulous level. My question was whether the current price is the same as it has been or whether it has been lowered due to the impeding rollout of the 40D.
Being a relatively new member, I was not aware that there is/was a "hot deals" forum ... I'll keep an eye out in that forum ... thanks for the tip!

The price went down initially quite a bit (I saw some prices drop as much as 150$) then it mostly rebounded. If used equipment interests you at all I suspect that the prices in the used market will be affected to a larger degree than new stock. If you only want to buy new, the best strategy will probably be regular searches of various dealers. There will surely be deals to be had but it will be a bit of a crap shoot finding them at times I guess. Good luck.

I'm somewhat skeptical of getting much of a price break in the near term. Yes, the 40D is a replacement, but it's being offered at its own price point that is a level above the 30D (at least with the 30D in the ~$950 range). I also see 20D's still selling in the mid-$800 range new (Beach). So, you've got xti meeting one price level, 20D/30D meeting the next step up, then 40D for those who can afford it at its price level. I see them as each supporting each other near current prices.
I've recently waffled in my decision between 30D and D80, but I'm waiting until Oct to buy. If I decide to go Canon, even if I don't get a meaningful price reduction I can hopefully then take advantage of fall rebates.

Ur kidding...right? These are two different Camera classes, u know that right?
30d is compared to a d200 and the d80 is compared with the Sony DSLR-A100, Canon EOS 400D, Canon EOS 350D also a $400 about price difference. Seems to me, if ur gonna say maybe, 30d then ur willing to spend $1000 body only then u should look at the d200 for the same price. At the 30d d200 levels if ur not willing to spend some coin on Lenses, IMO ur wasting money on a Camera that u will never use to its potential. So i do hope u have intension's of buying some good lenses.

Yes I know the 30D & D80 are 2 different classes, and I never mentioned considering an xti or xt (I only brought them up to argue my belief that they will support the 20D/30D near current price levels). What I'm considering is whether I want to buy into the Canon or Nikon system. I'm interested in portraiture, so the Nikon system is more appealing in regard to the flash system, but I can't swing the cost of the D200 yet. So, I'm considering the D80 for now on that side (or possibly even dropping to the D40 after reading Ken Rockwell's views on the subject). On the Canon side, I can afford a 30D which according to my pricegrabber searches last night is selling around $1,000 compared to closer to $1,500 for the D200. Canon is appealing to me for its high ISO performance and superiority for sports photography. I'm just waffling on which area of photography is more important to me.
Also, regarding your last statement, I agree if you're not willing to spend some coin on good lenses there's really not much reason to go high end on a body either. Sure, you get more features, but in the long run the glass will make more difference and will also hold its value better. So, if I'm going to scrimp now, I'm going to do it on the body, not the glass. So that's also part of my equation. The body's going to depreciate immediately, so part of me is thinking about saving with the D80 so I can spend the $100 I'm saving (at least through Beach Camera that's the price difference between D80/30D) on a nicer lens. Then the other side of me realizes how much more camera I would actually get with the 30D for just $100 more. So, as I said, I'm waffling right now.
