How many megapixels will suffice for you? 4+

* What optical zoom will you need? 3x or more (not critical)

* How important is “image quality” to you? 8

Do you care for manual controls? no, not at all

General Usage

* What will you generally use the camera for? family photos

* Will you be making big prints of your photos or not? maybe, not too big though

Will you be shooting a lot of indoor photos or low light photos? yes

Will you be shooting sports and/or action photos? not likely

Miscellaneous

Are there particular brands you like or hate? not really, just want the best in the price range

Are there particular models you already have in mind? no

(If applicable) Do you need any of the following special features? Image Stabilization would be nice

My vote for your budget is the Canon A460.

Canon A550 and A560 are under $200, also.

I have used a A550 and I loved its snappy and friendly feel/performance.

The A570, with the addition of IS, may be worth a few extra dollars.

I would suggest Canon SD700 IS or newer SD with IS. I bought SD700 over newer models because of nice reviews (quoted to have best pix quality among compact) and its a bit longer brighter lens... and so far I can say it works AMAZING for me. I confess for P&S I find Canon SD series being best out there for me personally. Own 2 older models too.

You may also like to check on slim Casio EX-Z1200 which looks like a P&S no brainer:
