I just bought the Cannon S5 IS two weeks ago. I just noticed today that when I point the camera towards a light (e.g. - ceiling) a purple line shows up vertically in the middle of the view finder and LCD monitor. Likewise, when I move it away from the light, the purple line disappears. Does this mean there is a problem with the internal prism or camera? Help!

No thats normal with many lcds when its overdriven by a light source.
Page 146 in the troubleshooting section of the advanced pdf manual explains it.

LCD's...so does that mean that the lines don't show up on the final picture? I always put it down to the apature being too wide open in a light situation, and shut the apature up a bit, which works fine. But if it's just the LCD it might be worth not sacrificing the DOF...

No as the troubleshooting page says, the lines do not show in the final picture.
Oh and don't confuse purple/red lines on the lcd with purple/red fringing which is something entirely different.

Those lines do appear in video however. Very annoying.

I got these "purplish lines" also with my G7 after half pressing the shutter in frames that contains bright light. Also, when taking picts with bright skies, the whole LCD frame even get that purple haze everywhere. But they dont appear in the captured image, so I guess this pretty much is a normal thing. I havent tried to test this with the video though. Will check out later.
