After many, many hours of research on this site and based on my bugetary constraints and photography needs, I have narrowed my choices down to the follolwing:

Kodak 7440
Kodak 7630
Canon A85
Canon A95

This will be my first digital camera purchase so a camera's ability to keep pace, for lack of a better phrase, with me as my interest and photography skills grow is a factor. Otherwise, I plan to take lots of indoor and outdoor photos, both people and landscapes. Movies ranks relatively low on my list of priorities.

Thanks in advance for your input and feel free to suggest an alternate choice.cie.steer me in a completely for you

a85 has better pic quality. just remember to buy some good Ni-MH AA rechargeables if you decide on the A85.

The 7440 has pretty good picture quality. It also produces very little
red-eye, and has manual features. It has a proprietary rechargeabale lithium-ion battery, but extras are readily available and not too expensive. It's easy to use as a point and shoot, but you can get creative with its manual features.

curtis, i'd suggest just looking at the sample pictures for both cams on this site and decide from there. look at the night shot and a few of the daytime shots and see if there is any difference to you. both cams are about the same in cost and a spare battery for the kodak + an sd card comes out pretty much the same in cost compared to a battery charger with two sets of batteries + a compact flash card for the canon. my main beef with the kodak is softness of details and that the night test shots just don't look right. the kodak does feel like it is better built and has a 4x zoom though. since you are asking for recommendations, i would personally go with the Canon.

I'm also deciding out of those two cameras...Are there any new ones in the same general price range/class that are better? If not which of the two are better... A85 from what i read has slightly better image quality...

The Canon A85 would be a good choice, but frankly speaking I'd say there is not much difference between both cameras. If you print out the photos, I'd say you can almost see no difference from the 2 cameras.

So, I'd say just get what you think you'd like the best and go SHOOT something.
