I just got a s3 about three months ago, and was wondering if you people use a mono or tri pod, or if they are even needed.

They're needed if the kind of photography you do needs them. If you can get the shutter speed as low as you need without blur from camera shake, then you don't need one. If you can't, then you do.

I'd hazard a guess (Although I have no experience of this so don't take it as law) that a monopod would be more convenient to carry, but a tripod would be more stable. As I said, just a guess though. I have an old tripod, it works pretty well.

If I need more hands free and timer use/night shots, intervalometer, indoor shots I use my tripod. If I need better stability than I can get by hand but in a hurry I use the monopod. For my lightbox photos I use a small table top tripod.
