Hi,

I've had a DX6490 for about 6 months now but have kinda out grown its functions. I'm still learning about digital photography but would like a camera with more control and higher megapixels (DX6490 is 4mp). I was wondering about a Canon EOS 300D, Nikon D70 or Nikon 8800.

I've never owned a SLR camera so am not sure if the 300D or D70 would be beyond my current 'skill set'. I mostly take landscape/building photography with some indoor shots.

Money wise i'd rather not spend more than about £600.

Any thoughts?

Many thanks

The 300D would be a logical step-up to dSLR's as it is the least expensive of the bunch and will give you very good image quality.

The D70 is a step-up from the 300D for a few hundred dollars more, but exceeds your £600 budget once you add a decent lens, a spare battery, and a couple of memory cards.

The 8800 is a nice camera, but will not allow you to expand your skills beyond an all-in-one level.

All-in-all I think you should seriously look at the 300D. With the accessories mentioned above, and the lens mentioned below, you will be right at the $1200 (£600) mark.

As a side note, I also recommend the Sigma 18-125 DC lens as a good all-around starter lens for either the 300D or the D70 (and even the 20D). In my opinion it is a better value than the "kit" lenses from Canon or Nikon.

As always, try before you buy. The question as to rediness for a dSLR can only be answered by you, and hands-on is the only way you will be able to decide.

Will have to take a look at the 300D (in the flesh).
