I just received my SD300 from Amazon.com and it seems to be making a funny noise whenever an operation is performed... I am not talking about the normal sound file it plays but instead some rattling noise of some sort... almost similar to the noise a harddrive makes when it is loading but more metalic. Anyone else have something similar or is my camera defective? Just to characterize the sound more, it sounds as if there is a metal pin scrapping against something else that is metal... but only very briefly. Can be heard on power up/down and when focusing.

Basically, is the SD300 supposed to run completely quiet except for the built-in sound files it plays or is there also some other "inner-workings" noise which is also heard when the camera is performing an operation? Sorry I can't be more specific about the strange sound but it is hard to describe.

I think my camera does what you're talking about. I dont really think anything of it. It does just sound like something mechanical, working inside. I put this down to it's power save.

Then what about the people who say that they their SD300's don't make this noise at all!! I have determined that my SD300 is making the mechanical scratching noise whenever the camera focuses. I am in the process of contacting Canon to see what they say...

Heard from Canon support... they want me to call them and put the camera up to the phone so they can hear the noise for themself and decide if it is defective or not. I went to a camera store the other day and all they had was a SD200 but it made the same exact metallic scratching noise when focusing. Maybe the people who say they hear no noise just don't know what we are talking about. Unfortunately, all SD200 and SD300's are all sold out in my town so I can't test out any others. The picture quality, however, is great and there are no other issues with the camera.
