Canon A75 freeze

After two years of trouble free picture taking my A75 has simply froze. The lens is still out the batteries are charged but there seems to be nothing I can do to bring it back to life as far as I can tell. I've tried replacing batteries, pressing all the buttons, to no avail--
any Ideas??

I have read on a few forums where people recommend trying some non rechargeable alkalines to see if you can restart the camera. I don't know what that is supposed to do differently than rechargeables, but it's worth a try.
