View Full Version : Ultra thin that gives image information?

I dropped my Nikon S3 so I'm looking for a replacement. It doesn't really need to be the latest and greatest, since I just use it for point and shoot images.
The one thing I missed with the S3 was the fact that I couldn't get any exposure information about the image I just took. Oddly enough, this would be very, very helpful to me. Since I take it everywhere, I would like to use it as an exposure meter when I'm carrying around my pinhole camera. With any other camera, I can take a picture and look at the exposure information, then use that to decide on the exposure for my pinhole image.
Is there an ultra slim camera out there that will give me this exposure information? Believe it or not, that's the most important thing I need with a replacement camera.
Thanks for your help.

The S3 will tell you all of the exposure information on the LCD.

Hmmm. Would you be able to tell me where I can find that information? I've not found anything about it in the documentation or looking throughout the system.
Thanks a bunch -

All modern cameras give exposure on LCD. You will have to check your user booklet.

When you're playing back an image on the LCD just press the Display button. It'll cycle through no info, some info, and all info. It even gives you a histogram.

Oops. Sorry. :o There are just so many Canon S3 owners on the forums here my brain skipped right over the word Nikon in the first sentence.

i dont know if this is true or not- but wouldent the exposure on your point and shoot be different than your pinhole due to the face that the p + s has a smaller sensor and an automatic iso adjustment? would that be different? anyways, sorry for my stupidity- it just occurred to me that it might be different

Indeed, it would be very different. That said, I am quite accustomed to converting information based on f22 and converting it to f295, taking into consideration reciprocity, the type of pinhole or zone plate I am using, and other things. If I have a starting point then I can get to the end.
So would I be correct in guessing that none of the ultra slims are able to give me exposure information? If not then I'll just go ahead and get my Nikon S3 fixed, but it'd be nice to have a camera that I could keep in my pocket that would also work as an exposure meter.

What do you mean, none of the ultraslims give exposure info? The Canons certainly do, and I would expect many others have a way of displaying that as well. Perhaps the Nikons don't, I haven't used them. According the the reviews on this site it appears Nikon indeed shortchanges you on this information.

Actually, that was more of a question than a statement (thus the question mark <g>). I read the reviews of the following cameras without finding any information about whether or not they would give me exposure information. Of course, it is quite possible that this was mentioned and I simply missed it.
Canon PowerShot SD400 and SD500 (has shutter speed but no f stop information?)
Fuji FinePix Z1
Kodak EasyShare V550
Olympus Stylus Verve S
The picture you showed appears to have f stop information but not shutter speed, if I am understanding it correctly. I would like to find one that has both, if that exists in an ultra slim camera.

Oh wait, I do see one second exposure time in the image. What kind of camera is that?

That image is from the review on this site of the SD1000. I don't know when they started adding full image info to the display in the SD-series. Check the reviews of the SD850 and SD900.
