Just got my first SD cards yesterday (I've used compactflash previously) & noticed they don't come with a label, they tell you in the manual to not use a label, not to use a pencil (may damage the circuitry inside) but rather to write directly on the card with a felt-tip pen.

Huh????? All I want to do is label my cards with my name and 1, 2, 3, etc. so I don't get them mixed up, & I'd like to do this in a nonpermanent manner. Is it really impossible to put a thin sticker on the back of an SD card w/o interfering with its fit in cameras?

I wouldn't try putting an adhesive label on the cards. Some cameras have tighter fits in the card slots than others. You may be able to insert the card, and you may not. It is also possible that after a few insertions/retractions, that the label might start peeling off and result in the card getting stuck in the camera. Even worse might be that some of the adhesive comes off the label and somehow gets on the contacts inside the camera.

What you might want to try is to number the cards with a felt tip pen, and then on a separate sheet of paper, list each card number and what's on that particular card. This works for me, and it's a whole lot safer. Good luck

I carry my CF cards in their little cases. I put them face toward the lid when they're empty and face toward the back when they're full. Et voilá - it works; I can identify my spare cards!
