This shot was taken a few weeks ago in Kiel, Germany, during the "Kieler Woche", which is the biggest sailing event in the world and also a huge folksfest.
This special event called "Night Glow". Because I forgot my tripod, I had to take everything free hand. I hope, it's still worth to show. :)

This is from the July 3rd, 2007 Park Ridge, IL display at 9:46 PM
I liked the way it lined up. It had started to rain just as the fireworks display began ... and things took on some strange reflections.

I know the landmark is not sharp. Apparently my tripod wasn't sturdy enough for the new lens I was borrowing and the vertical orientation.

Wow, dubuque44, that's beautiful. And on your knee, no less? It rained here, so I didn't go out to the fireworks :( although we did have some lightning! I'm looking forward to seeing more of your shots :) Welcome to the forum!

These all look quite different from anything I've seen here yet. The first couple were taken when the sky was still pretty bright.

I used a Panasonic FZ20 on a tripod.
Fstop set at 5.6 and 5 sec exposure.
ISO 100 and unknown focal length.
Turned off image stabilization.
Manual focus set at infinity.

The first one was at ISO 800 in error. I (with many other people) was on a sidewalk across the street from the stadium show...the last one was the big finale and it was pretty smokey.

Taken with a Nikon D40 (which I've now have almost a month, had the D50 previously). Shot in RAW+JPEG mode. Used the "image overlay" feature the D40 has which allows you to combine 2 RAW images into a new single image (kind of like multiple exposures or combining images in Photoshop, except done this way they turn out brighter for some reason). Did this because I saw a pier after the fireworks were over, and then thought to add some of the "zoom-in" fireworks shots to it after the fact. Turns out those shots were better than any of the "overall" originals.
Manual-mode used, fireworks shots done in bulb mode at f/8 or f/11, pier shot with 30 seconds at f/8. Wireless remote used (ML-L3).
Edited the shots in Nikon Capture 4.4 (using the "d40hack" trick). Applied -½EV (approximately), changed from Mode Ia to IIIa, sharpness at medium-high, and applied S-curve.

I also could not see Larrys pictures until I right clicked on the red X, selected properties and then copied & pasted the URL into my browser. Now I can see the pics.... Strange, I've had this happen on other sites as well. BTW, Larry, those composite pics look great.....

Were you using/not using a tripod for your shots?
I assume that was toward me... sorry, I was NOT using a tripod. I only had my mini one with me and this was my first try at all at doing fireworks. I just took a lot and saved the ones that looked interesting. My wife got one shot that looked like that ideal standard of firework photography, but it was only the bottom 3rd of the burst. I like the craziness of some of my shots though.

thus the reduced quality and resolution (I took these off my facebook album as I am not home at the moment, which means no access to the original files).

I just relocated to california from new jersey and moved into a loft in downtown san jose on July 3rd. I was home on the 4th doing 'new apartment' stuff when all of sudden about 2 blocks away from my new digs, San Jose fireworks!!
I took the 30D out on the balcony, and here is some of what I got.

Some fireworks shots I took at the National Monument in Washington DC on July 4, 2007 with a handheld Canon Powershot SD 800 IS. I wasn't expecting much but they turned out okay.
