View Full Version : Nikon D70 or Olympus E-300 (Evolt)

I want to make the move to DSLR and thought I had finally made my decision to go with the Nikon D70. Now Olympus throws the Evolt into the mix at a good price with a very attractive kit.
My only concerns are, the Evolt is just released and from what I've read, the 8 mega pixel cameras have more picture quality issues than the 5-6 mega pixel cameras. As a result, they require quite a bit more post processing. I'm willing to gamble that Olympus has created a quality product. However, being a newbie, I don't want to overly complicate the post processing. This concern is actually why I ruled out the Minolta Dimage A2.
Does anyone have any input to add to this?

6MP or 8MP usually does not matter on APS-C sized sensors (dSLR's). In this case the 4/3 sensor is a little smaller, but I don't think image quality will be much of a factor, and the E-300 shouldn't take any more post processing than any other dSLR images.
I'm using a D70, and like it a lot. But if you like the E-300 I can't think of a single technical or image quality reason not to buy one, and I do like the 4/3 imager. I just wish it were larger. But, of course, then it would cost more.
Looks like a nice camera, unfortunately I haven't had a chance to play with one yet.

Thanks George,
It seems I have more to think about. Do I go with a proven camera or the new kid on the block?
I do have one more additional question for anyone to answer. How much would I be giving up if I decide to go with the 6 mega pixel over the 8? I understand that the 8 should crop better and print at large formats without losing as much detail. Is this correct and are there any other issues related to this I should be considering?
