Hello,

I've had my Canon Powershot for about a week but I'm having real problems connecting it to my PC to transfer the pictures. I installed the drivers first but when I plug the camera into the USB according the manual the camera should display "PC" on the LCD but instead it nearly always says "PB" (Play Back) and the computer says "USB device not recognised".

Once in a while when I plug the USB cable in the camera does display "PC" and the computer finds the camera and transfers the pictures.

Has anyone seen a similar problem - is the camera at fault, USB cable, me? :(

Thanks

I guess we are both having problems with our new toys. I havn't tried to connect direct to my camera yet. Instead I bought an inexpensive usb 2 compact flash card reader with cable £18 (uk). This will transfer files quicker anyway as the G6 has only a usb 1 connection and it won't run down your battery also.

Regards

Thanks for your reply, I think I'll buy a card reader too.

Could someone with a G6 let me know what happens when you:
1. Switch the camera off
2. Plug in the USB cable connected to your PC (with the Canon drivers installed)

Does your camera switch on and go to "PB" or "PC" mode?

What I have found is that the first time I plug the camera into a new USB port(not been plugged into that port before) it works, but the next time it has the same problem. Really odd.

I would uninstall all the canon software and just let XP pick up the camera to be honest.

FIX : 'Canon Digital Solutions Disk v20' and ZoomBrowser XE

Dave Corbett dave@productshots.com wrote to forum Canon Talk at
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1010&message=11531540
to reply to my query.

I spent about an hour on the phone with Canon getting my Zoombrowser
installed. My problem turned out to be a WINDOWS problem and a re-install
fixed everything.

That being said... Canon will suggest the following to just about EVERYONE
having problems.

1. Turn off the Explorer Pop-up Blocker... this seems to cause problems even
with non-explorer operations
Open Internet Explorer.

2. On the Tools menu, point to Pop-up Blocker, and then click Pop-up Blocker Settings.

3. Copy the "Software" folder from the install CD to your HD and install from
there.

4. Try creating another User Account with Admin privileges and try installing
using that log on.

The Technicians at Canon Support were excellent - give them a call if you
can't get it fixed!

fh1 COMMENT:

Tried Dave’s fix and ‘IT-WORKED’ but here are a few tips to help you further as I tried about every ‘.exe’ file before I found the correct one (I didn’t need to use Dave’s step 4 above and unlike Dave I didn’t find the Technicians at Canon Support very helpful at all).

But Yippee -- My G6 camera will now talk to my computer

1. As well as turning off your Internet Explorer Pop-up Blocker also temporarily disable your ANTI-VIRUS & FIREWALL programs before reinstalling your software.
2. Un-install all of your Canon programs using ‘Control Panel – Add/Remove Programs.
3. After copying the 'Canon Digital Solutions Disk v20' to a folder on my hard drive in my case ‘C:\Downloads\Canon Digital Camera Solutions Disk v20’ . The file you activate is to be found in the sub-directory … \SOFTWARE\ZOOMBRSR\ENGLISH\ SETUP.EXE
and this will install all of the ZoomBrowser components.
4. You now need to install the ‘PhotoStitch’ program etc. to do this just install this from the 'Canon Digital Solutions Disk v20' using the CUSTOM INSTALLATION but selecting only the remaining items (don’t try to re-install the ZoomBrowser XE program again).

Good Luck

Thanks guys,

Canon Technical Support got back to me with a few suggestions (included below in case it helps anyone else) - I had a quick look, then went straight down the shops and bought a card reader instead!

Thank you for your recent enquiry regarding your Canon product. In response to your query, please find below a step-by-step guide to follow in order to solve your problem.

There are various reasons that the camera is not recognized or detected by the PC.

First check if the USB port was on board or installed afterward in the machine. Ports that are not on board can cause problems. Is the device connected over a hub to the PC? If so connect it directly to the computer first.

Is the camera turned ON and set to PLAY mode?

Are the batteries fresh? Preferably connect the camera to an adapter.

Check the device manager and look if there are any marks that indicate a malfunctioning status of any device or port. Your camera should be listed under "Imaging Devices".

Following marks can appear:
- A question mark
- An exclamation mark

When a question mark appears, it means that the driver is not installed correctly.

Insert the CD, exit the auto install, and return to the device manager.
Double click on the device and a new window will appear.
This window contains two tabs, GENERAL and DRIVERS.
Click on drivers and go to ‘UPDATE DRIVERS’.

Now the Windows Wizard appears, press next.

The Wizard will now ask what you would like him to do. Choose the 2nd option. (Advanced) and click "Next".

Again select the 2nd option (Don’t search) and click "Next".

Click "Have disk", and then "Browse". Select the CD-drive containing the Digital Camera Solutions Disc.

Click "Next" and then "OK". The wizard will start installing the software.

Select "Finish" and reboot the PC.

If an exclamation mark appears, a conflict with other drivers is detected and the driver cannot function correct.

Reconnect the camera on to another USB port

If the error persists, delete the camera and reconnect it

Try to manually reinstall the device using the Hardware Wizard.

If the error persists: Go to the device manager; delete the camera and the USB ports.

Reboot the PC and reinstall the drivers.

If the device appears correct in the device manager and the PC does still not detect the camera, then check the camera on another PC. If it operates as intended on another PC then there may be hardware and/or software problems on the first computer.

If NOT then there is something wrong with the camera itself OR the ports of the PC and it should be accordingly checked.
