Just curious if any of you know the cheapest (and reputable) place to find this lens. I know earlier B&H was having a special on it for $1600, but I can't find that anymore, that also uses the $100 rebate. I saw it at BeachCamera for a little under $1600 w/ the rebate.
Also if/when I get the IS version, how much could I get (or should ask) for my non IS version? It is a little over a year old, and in excellent shape. Is $1000 to cheap to be asking for it? I know they keep their value really well.
Thanks,
Jason

Hey Jason,
Dont have time to provide you with a link right now, but with the rebate going on I just got this lens on amazon.com for around $1,535 shipped( about 3 weeks ago). This was the best I found at the time, but I'm not sure if it's still this price.
GREAT lens!!

If you click the rebate, it says "Price Reflects Canon $100 Instant Rebate"
Thats how most of them are now. I imagine if the $1600 'special' from earlier is gone now, since the rebate is in effect.

Thanks. So far this seems like the best deal, and Amazon is a good company as well.

Not so. I have the following experiences of Amazon.
1. I ordered a book using their 3-day delivery option. It didn't arrive after a week so I complained, receiving a paltry 10% off coupon and a statement that it should arrive within days. I waited another week and nothing arrived. I complained again and nothing happened aside from another worthless apology and statement that it would arrive. Two weeks later I complained again as it still had not arrived. I received yet another worthless apology and a statement that it would arrive. I then received my credit card statement that said I'd been billed as soon as I'd ordered so I contacted the credit card company and told them the story. They said they'd chase the retailer and two weeks later my book arrived. I'd needed that book urgently and it took 6 weeks for a 3-day delivery to arrive!
2. I ordered another book from Amazon and it arrived within the three days but was not new as described. It was torn, dog-eared, dirty and stank of stale tobacco. I didn't have time to complain and send it back as I had to rush off to a job abroad. By the time I got back (6 months later) I figured it was too late to do anything about that book.
3. I ordered a battery charger for my Nikon 995. I was billed and received an email stating that it was not in stock and would be in stock in 2 weeks. 2 weeks later I received an identical email. The same happened after a further 2 weeks and then after yet another 2 weeks. I complained, stating that they clearly did not stock the item and clearly had no intention of ever stocking the item. I also complained that I'd been billed on day one. I received no response from Amazon and filed a claim with my credit card company who refunded my money.
Can I recommend Amazon? Sure - if you want to add them to the list of Brooklyn-type e-scammers.

That's interesting because if I add to cart it shows the price as $1598. Are they giving you the rebate or is Canon?

They are- It's an instant rebate.
btw- I've had nothing buy amazing service from Amazon. Really top notch company, imo.
But that may largely depend on...
-are you buying the item NEW, or under the 'NEW and USED' category, in which people sell there items personally
-Is the item sold by Amazon, or just a merchant through amazon? My best experience has been items sold directly by amazon (I think my lens was), but they usually have pretty decent merchants on there as well.

The rebates now are being handled by the sellers, so prices usually include the rebate.

I've ordered several things from them in the past (not recently) and haven't had any complaints. If they list something as being out of stock, then I wouldn't order it. Something this big though, I might not order from them anyway. I've had nothing but success with B&H, and would rather spend a little extra for a quality company.

Hi jWhite,
My name is Kevin. I am an amateur photographer in LA and just found this forum. I am selling the lens you are looking for including a 1.4x teleconverter and a Hoya protector filter for $1500. I have it up on ebay now, but would cancel it if you did not want to go through ebay.
