Yes, I've read the lens review section. It really didn't help

I'm looking at pairing the lens with a 400D. Thought? Anyone have any samples, by any chance?

I'm looking to photograph static airplanes and people/family stuff mostly.

What do ya think?

I don't have the 17-40, but my brother does & he loves it on the 5D. Here is a page with sample shots. http://www.pbase.com/cameras/canon/ef_1740_4l

It will work fine but there are better choices:

Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS
Tamron 17-50 f/2.8
Simga 18-50? f/2.8

You'll appreciate the extra focal length and f/stop.

D - Thanks for the picture links :)

Rich - I'm not buying the 17-55 f/2.8 IS. The IS would be nice, but isn't really needed for the type of photography I'll be doing -- so why pay for it? And more importantly, the price is about $400 more than the 17-40L. As for the Tamron, I did see an interesting site: http://hem.bredband.net/content/canon/tamron1750/tamronvscanon.html that compared the 2 lenses side by side. It's interesting and something I'll def. look into more, thanks :-)

The Sigma 18-50 f2.8 EX DC Macro is a better lens than that Tamron, optically (and in build quality).

So, be sure to check out that Sigma.

Agreed, very nice lens on a 5D though

How is this lens? I mean how is it when focussing? Is it fast and quiet? And I know it's not true macro, I think the ratio is 1:3 if I'm not mistaken. I 'm interested in this lens so any comments about the pros and cons of it would be really appreciated. Cheers!:D

I got the Sigma 18-50 EX DC Macro (man, they need a shorter name) when I got my XTi. I don't have a similar lens to compare it to so let me just say that I am very happy with it. Its very fast to focus, makes a good sound when it does... The only time it hunts is when I forget to take the lens cap off (which happens far more often than you would think!). It has a nice weight to it and feels very solid and well-built.

I haven't come up with a con yet.... although in a perfect world I would like it to be a little bit longer. Maybe a 18-70?

I've got this lens and I agree with Dusty. It also comes with a hood, which is nice. Except for the lack of IS, which I really do like, I have nothing negative to say about this lens.

I was a former owner of this lens. Very well built, fast, solid. The only beef I had was the F4 and shot a lot of indoor.

Outdoor shots were pretty good. I only had misfocusing issues because of my XT body, but when it did hit focus it was very crisp and vibrant.
