Okay, I want to rent/buy some lighting to do some studio shots. I need some quick and dirty advice. I need to photograph 4 people at the same time (band photos). Will I need a lightmeter?

I don't think anyone needs a lightmeter.

The best spot for quick advice is over at POTN on the flash/studio light forum. If you post a question you'll get an answer in minutes. Trust feedback you get from TMR.

Need? I would think you'd want one if you're doing multiple strobes to get your ratio's right. I guess you could also do a bunch of test shots to check and hope for the best.

If you have multiple lights a meter is very helpful. If you have multiple subjects in a shot it is also very helpful. Is it necessary? Probably not. Is it worth it to get one if you regularly do studio shooting? I think so.

Thanks for the input guys. Looks like I might be in over my head right now. I need to spend some quality time learning this stuff.

Nick, I found this book to be a great read on the subject of studio lighting. It really simplifies things quite a bit. I haven't bought my lights or put the knowlege into use yet but I have a friend who used it and has really done very well with this approach. http://www.lightingmagic.com/litbook.htm

Nick, if you want to get the cost down on these DVDs I'll rent them from you for a week for $20. Pete can forward them to me and then I'll send them to you after watching them.
