9100 and external flash..

I hope someone can help. this past weekend I tried using my external flash with the S9100 camera. I set the setting in the menu for external flash to ON. when I take a photo, the 1st photo does not fire the flash.. I take a second photo and it fires. the I take a 3rd photo and it does not fire the flash but the 4th one does. etc.. You see the pattern. Basically every other photo fires the flash. I am using a Nikon SB50DX flash. I tried it in TTL mode and also manual mode. It didnt make a difference. Why is it doing this and how do I fix it? Also, I was shooting in the "A" mode. I did make sure the RED ready light was on on the flash before I took a photo.

Seems like the problem is somehow tied to the flash unit expecting a redeye reduction preflash or a focus flash or similar before it fires.
