Sorry - novice here! What is the difference between flash memory card and a regular or highspeed SD card?

Also, we are going on vacation and will take numerous pics. Have a konica/minolta and canon cameras that both use SD cards. Is there any device (don't want to take laptop) that I can download a copy of my pics off the memory cards for safekeeping....or if I want to format the cards to take more pics? I'm talking about 6GB worth.
Thank you.
Sue

SueAll these camera storage cards are made up of FLASH memory chips, Compact Flash, SD, xD, etc.

At the price of SD cards these days, your cheapest alternative is to just buy a few 2GB SD cards, rather than spending $200-$300 on an MP3 device that will store pictures. You can also usually buy more wherever you go, they're pretty commonly available.

As John said, with the price of SD cards today it's probably simpler to just buy a few more 2G cards. They'll take up less room, are cheaper, and more reliable then a hard-drive based device.

You can get a 2G card from NewEgg.com for $15 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134445. How many shots to you expect to take?
