Anyone know if the panel with the screen has to be open in order to take shots? I am thinking of buying this camera instead of the Sony TSC-100 because it has HD.

You can indeed shoot with the flip out screen closed but why would you want to, since you cannot see to compose your shots ? Remember, there is NO optical viewfinder on the TX 1. The camera is capable of extremely high quality HD movie shooting. It was because of the 720p HD video that I purchased this camera. There is no other traditional HD camcorder out there which can shoot HD video for the money ! The learning curve to fly this device is extremely steep, but rewarding once mastered. The instruction book is 161 pages and you will need to read it in ful to figure stuff out. There are several "hidden" menus and sub menus in this camera which must be mastered and understood in order to take full advantage of the myriad of features. Even in 720p LP (Long Play) mode, the HD quality is literally stunning ! This camera is VERY noisy in low light, but fiddling with the ISO presets does serve to alleviate this problem somewhat. (i.e. in low light set the ISO to "Auto ISO," or "Auto High" position.) I disagree that this camera is difficult to hand hold, or hand hold steadily. The TX 1 is an extremely light camera and it can be held absolutely motionless with one hand without any fatigue whatsoever. The only caveat I would add to hand holding the camera is to make sure none of your fingers are over the lens oraface when you turn on the camera or you will manage to smudge your lens ! Still don't like hand holding this camera ? You can screw this baby to any tripod, since it has a 3/8 inch deep tapped Wentworth thread ! The camera can have its autofocus locked so the camera does not continue to "hunt" for the focus, which looks disgusting in 720 p ! Unfortunately, you cannot also lock the exposure when shooting in "Movie" mode ! You can lock exposure in still picture mode.

Slightly off topic question. For anyone who had a chance to play with both, How does the TX1 compare to the Sanyo Xacti HD2 ? Thanks!

yes, I have
The Sanyo is a bit easier to hold but pretty cheaply made, it has a nice dock, which you might like
The TX1 is smaller, all metal body, very solid work well, however you might have some trouble getting your hands on one. The battery life it quite short but you can buy extra third party batteries for $5 including shipping on Ebay!
overall I really like the TX1 and decided on it for my camera
