I saw a recommendation here for a monopod with extendable legs on the bottom. It's a Manfrotto Bogen 682 (I think), for about $95 at a few different on-line stores.

Are there any other monopods out there with the same extendable legs feature?

Most - if not all monopods have extendable legs.

Rhys,

I do believe he's talking about the foldout tripod foot that you can pull out of the bottom tube.

I have one of these and it works quite well. I put the Bogen 3265 Ball-grip on the top of it, to give it a lot more flexibility than just being a pole with a screw mount at the top.

Thanks, both of you, for the replies. Don, I think you are the person whose post I saw with the picture of that monopod a while back.

I just wondered if there was a little bit less expensive version of it out there. If there is, I can't find it.

Have you traveled with this monopod much? I understand the smallest measurement when it's folded up is about 29 inches. I was hoping I could carry it in my backpack with the top sticking out a little bit. Going to Europe in a few months for a 3-week vacation and plan to take as many pictures as possible, especially some night shots. I love old cathedrals and castles illuminated at night.

Thanks,
Sandi

No, this bad boy is more like an aluminum bat, than a lightweight monopod. You definitely can use it for self-protection ... and God help the guy on the receiving end.

I'll be honest, I bought the 682 strictly for its tripod footing. It has come in very handy as a quick and adjustable lightstand for my electronic flash, for backgrounds and the "second light" to erase shadows.

I used it as a "hair light" stand in the setup above.
