Hello, I bought a Canon PowerShot SD750 last week. I'm going to Europe for about 4 weeks. I have no experience with digital cameras so I really don't know how much memory I should purchase. I won't be taking more than 40 shots a day. How much memory would you recommend??

I would take one memory card and a backup storage/reader unit such as the wolverine. In the very, very unlikely event that you memory card should fail you could easily obtain another one just about anywhere in Europe. You're more likely to keep a backup/storage unit through future upgrades than you would memory cards. Well, at least I would. As for size, I would go for the card the represents the best price per meg ratio. I'm not sure what size that might be these days though. Good luck.

I'd get two 1 gig cards to start, plus a backup device as mentioned perhaps. I get 307 shots per card with my 7.1 mp Canon A620. I use Sand Disk Ultra II's, but there are many others - some cheaper, some slower.
I went for 6 weeks and came back with 1,500 photos. I took no videos but think that was an error now. I suggest you budget for at least 1000 photos plus some video as well.

40 shots a day?! I do that before breakfast. :)
Memory is cheap. You can get 2G cards for $25, I'd buy two. Get more if you need them over there. Europe is pretty civilized that way.
I agree with everyone, get a 1-2gb card as its so cheap now and a backup of around the same size
I'm trigger happy :)
you won't believe how many photos you take until you upload them

I've got 4 GB and am worried I might need to double that. I shoot in RAW so my images are larger, but it is always better to be safe than sorry. Like mentioned before, you can always buy more if needed while your travelling.

Sorry, I forgot to mention why I wnat to double that. I am going from Hong Kong to England by train via China, Mongolia, Russia and Europe. I will be gone for 5 weeks.
Any recomendations on a small, light, external photo storage device? Or should I just buy more cards?

Buy more cards. You won't believe how light-fingered Russians are nor how arrogant they are about it.
Spread the risk by using severalcards.

More cards. They're small, light, and relatively cheap. If you run out, you'll probably be able to find a computer store that will burn them to DVD for you.

Don't trust computer stores out there - they use pirated software and that usually carries viruses.

Thanks for the tip. Not that different than here in Taiwan too:p
By the way... Russia can be a very strange place. In some areas foreigners are tolerated whereas in others people are extremely xenophobic. They can be extremely racist and extremely anti-semitic too. It's a country in which you have to know who to talk to and who not to talk to. I spent years working on the fringes in the Baltic states just after the USSR disintegrated.

I went to Europe last year for 2 weeks. Came back with ~2,700 shots (~ 7GB).
Borrowed a laptop to transfer the files from my memory card into my iPod everyday. I only had a 2GB SD card.
The big difference between film and digital for me is I can shoot all I want, and just get the shots I really like printed. I don't see why you're limiting yourself to 40 shots a day. I was averaging around 200 shots a day.

Thanks for the help. We will be sticking to three main cities, Irkutsk, Moscow and St. Petersberg So I'm hoping everything should be alright. I'm used to travelling to strange places and being treated in so many different ways, but this trip will definitely be one to remember. I'm also very curious about mongolia so can't wait for that leg of the trip!
For me I do 1gb cards, nothing under 80x speed, always RAW, at the mo have 5 1gb cards. In very picturesque places I can rattle through 2-3 cards in a day easy.
You could get an MP3 player like this: http://www.cowonglobal.com/product/product_X5_feature.php
It has inbuilt software that allows you to plug your camera into it and download pictures straight to it so you can store your photos on the mp3 player and have music with better sound quality than an ipod to boot :)
