This decision is driving me insane.

I cannot decide which to purchase, the Sony cyber-shot DSC w80 or the Canon powershot SD1000. I've read the reviews and compared the specs a thousand times, but I cannot seem to make up my mind.

The allure of the Cybershot is great. The things that continue to sway me toward its side are the higher burst mode, battery life, and most significantly the optical image stabilization. However the required special memory sticks (instead of standard and cheaper SD memory) and tales of un-reliability detract from it.

I have a feeling that the powershot would be more reliable. It's from Canon and uses the cheaper SD memory, and I've heard positive remarks about image quality and the camera in general. But the lower burst mode (only 1.7 vs the cybershot's 2.7) and especially the lack of Optical Image Stabilization keep pushing me away.

I've teetered back and forth a thousand times and cannot seem to go one way or the other. This is my first digital camera, and I could really use some advice from the more advanced, experienced users out there.

I guess one of my main questions are whether or not OIS is a great help, (because that's the real crux of my indecision) and do people find the difference in burst mode significant enough to draw the line?. But other points of compare/contrast between the camera are important to.

Which camera should I buy?

---------------------------------------------

Budget

* What budget have you allocated for buying this camera? Please be as specific as possible.
Up to $250
Size

* What size camera are you looking for? Or does size not matter at all to you?
Slim/compact is a plus, open to slightly larger though.
Features

How many megapixels will suffice for you?
6+
* What optical zoom will you need? (None, Standard = 3x-4x, Ultrazoom = 10x-12x, Other - Specify)
Standard is fine
* How important is “image quality” to you? (Rate using a scale of 1-10)
Very. 9
Do you care for manual controls?
Not really, as I'm not looking for professional shots. Though as with any optional feature, it's a plus.
General Usage

* What will you generally use the camera for?
General shots of friends, family, and my life in general.
* Will you be making big prints of your photos or not?
Unlikely.
Will you be shooting a lot of indoor photos or low light photos?
50/50 (indoor/outdoor) I'd predict. So yes.
Will you be shooting sports and/or action photos?
Doubtful, but as a general use camera it could happen.
Miscellaneous

Are there particular brands you like or hate?
No, though I've heard good things about Canon and bad things about Sony.
Are there particular models you already have in mind?
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W80 vs. Canon Powershot SD1000
(If applicable) Do you need any of the following special features? (Wide Angle, Image Stabilization, Weatherproof, Hotshoe, Rotating LCD)
Image Stabilization would be a big plus, though I'm still trying to determine how important it actually is.

Hmm, the review of the Sony W80 by Jeff Keller is not exactly very positive about that particular model, not IQ wise nor usability wise.

Why don't you look at a Canon SD series with image stabilization instead of the SD1000?
The SD700 IS, SD800 IS and SD850 IS all sport image stabilization, and all are better than the Sony W80 image quality and usability wise.

The thing is, my budget isn't unlimited. Those are $400 cameras, and I just don't have that kind of money. $250 (maybe $300 ) is my budget limit. More suggestions/opinions appreciated.

im in the same boat as you Aegis, please let us know what u decide. I've been over this same decision several times in my head over the past 2 weeks or so and i still i cant decide. ive been to best buy and other stores several times testing both out to see what i liked best. i was gonna go with the sony till it get a lack luster review on this site. which i was really disappointed by since cnet gave a good one. but i have feeeling they do not test their cameras as extensively as DCR does. i personally leaning towards the sony right because it gets better battery life. and it has optical stablization. the reason i want the canon is for better image quality and and SD cards are generally cheaper. guy on ebay is offerening me a good deal on the sony and i think im going to take it. and hell if i dont like it after few weeks of using it i just put it back on eBay.

Have you checked out the Canon A570IS? You can get it now for under $250 and it has OIS and full manual controls if you ever wanted to try those out. Jeff gave it an excellent review for both great picture quality and performance. I myself am actually trying to decide between the A570IS and new SD850IS.

From the reviews here, the SD1000 appears to be hands down a better camera than the W80.

Both cameras are quite small, which will compromise image quality, but if you are not planning on using manual controls or making big prints, that might not be as important to you as you assume.

IS is useful for hand held still lifes at long zoom or low light - think museums - but these don't have long zooms and a high sensitivity camera like the Fuji F series is better for low light. (Or a larger P&S or DSLR)

Burst mode captures a succession of pictures. It is useful for shooting sports or other special situations, but you will spend time deleting the non-keepers.

Buy something cheap and decide what you want in your next camera...

johnathan, so u think having the image stablization in the sony wont help much? in terms of image quality and crispness?

It will help a great deal if you are taking hand-held pictures of still lifes or subjects at rest in less than bright light... It's a nice addition to have, but if it's a necessity, you probably need to think about tripods, external flashes, or bigger and more sensitive cameras.

I ended up going with the Canon SD1000, for the better image quality, SD cards, and generally more positive reviews. I have not used it extensively as of yet, but so far I believe it will be fine for my purposes. I'll probably never really need to use burst mode, and so far I haven't noted any significant gaps in image quality that I think OIS would be able to fix.

Thanks for everyone's advice. If you go with the Sony, Prolifick21, let me know how that works out for you.

please give us ur take on the sony cuz im still unable to decide. i leaning towards the canon and i'll just get another battery. do u guys think if i were to lengthen the shutter speed that would help sharper the pictures up more to kinda up against the sony's image stablization.

i was just looking at and older sony camera the T30. and it got a really good review overall from this site. im thinking that might be a better choice then all of them and cheaper too. that is if i can find one. it has everything i want without face detect which is a minor thing nonetheless, kool little feature, what your guys thoughts on it?

:) Well by now u already got your new p&s but i just want to add that 2 days ago i got the W80 based on a lot of good reviews about it and been shootin with it since then download pictures to a pc and a laptop and they look great. have not print any yet, but so far pictures indoors look way better than my old canon sd600. Also think that the sd1000 looks sheap (compare to sd600 and to the w80) please let me know how the sd1000 is doing, i will post on the w80 later.

I am in the exact same boat. I even made a topic about it lol.

Anyways I ahve been reading reviews and I have been playing around with the display model at BestBuy and I noticed that the batter/memory card door feels somewhat cheap.

I mean it seems that it was loose and would pop open fairly easily. I dont want to get it the sony only to have the door break off in a week. What I like about the sony w80 is the digital stabilzation since I will be free handing most of my shots but on the other hand I hear that the LCD screen sucks hard in the sun while the Cannon is great.
