Today, I took on the demolition of my son's play-fort of his youth. Age had taken its toll on the structure, as year after year, the weather and the sun soaked and baked it into unusability. The local paper-wasp population also seemed to enjoy the "cover" it provided from the elements. Always a nasty surprise in the late spring for the kids.

The structure was constructed with pressure-treated lumber, which unfortunately means it becomes "toxic" (like many decks constructed in the past decade of the same type of treated wood) after a number of years, as the wood breakes down. While I wish I could have handed the "fort" to someone else to enjoy ... it was too far gone to even consider it. So, for four hours ... today ... my son and I went through the entire demolition of "Fort Schap" ... reducing it to a memory of better days and his imagination.

The base bricks will be used elsewhere and after testing the soil for contamination, the lawn returned to its former green and lush quality.
