So,

I have decided to get an Canon G6 and just had a message from 'Santa' that it's been ordered!

I have a couple of questions - if you'd be so kind!

(1) It's coming from the US so I need to do something about the charger. Does the charger have a separate wire from the charger to the plug socket, that I could replace - or do I need a whole UK unit? I've seen one advertised for about £20 which is a proper Canon one and probably worth ordering IMO.

(2) Do I definitely need an extra battery? What mAh number is good if I order a compatible would 1200 be okay or is 1500 WAY better?

(3) I also need to get a larger compact flash card. Would there be any advantage in getting CF II over CF I or vice versa? What speed should I get so I can take one photo quickly after another? Is 512MB a good size?

Thanks in advance!

1. I think you would be happier with the correct charger made for UK use.

2. Definately get another battery. The higher the power rating the better.

3. CFII cards ar typically for very large memory cards (8GB+) mainly for professional use and Microdrives. CF I cards are the most common and available in the same speed ranges up to about 4GB. I would recommend that you get the faster (40X to 80X) cards, as they are only about $20 more, and offer much better download speeds using a USB 2.0 High Speed card reader (definately worth the investment). I would buy at least a 512MB card as this will give you ~75 shots in RAW and ~170 shots in Large-Superfine JPEG. As time goes on you might want to get a couple of 1GB card for vacations. The nice thing about flash memory cards is they don't get more expensive over time...

You will only have to invest in these extras (charger, battery, memory) once for the life of the camera, and chances are that will be many years.

You point have been aptly covered but i'll answer anyway

1] The USA charger will be expecting 115V so plugging it in to a 230V wall socket might just kill it.

2] I bought a spare battery, a lower capacity battery the same as in the G5 but it was a Uniross and not some no namer, it did 300 shots with full flash and TFT use last month at an indoor event and the battery meter had not moved, that said the one supplied goes on for ages and ages.

3] I bought a 1GB Kingston from Ebuyer for 44 quid cos the G6 does not benefit from spending loads on mega fast cards. at 7MP superfine i get around 350 images on the card.

I bought 512MB SanDisk Ultra II. I think it is suitable for me. I can take picture around 160-170 pictures (7.1M Super Fine) or equal to 4 rolls of 35mm. film.
