#1 is my favourite. love those moments you capture. :)
...I'd go for #1 too for mine. She's going to break some hearts your little girl one day.;)
Great Pics! And I find little children to be the most difficult yet most rewarding "subjects".
My favouite is No1.

Hi guys........thanks so much!!:)
My daughter wanted to know whaddya all think about her and I told her....:)she's very happy!!!
She's my little one so I adore all of them, but I love the moment 2 the best.....that sulky pout coz lol......... she was bored!!! I had dressed her up and wanted to shoot and she wanted to consider which chocolates to take to school for her birthday.......and somehow......she looks older.....
Yeah zmikers, there is something about moment3. I like the light on her. The moment ones are really about her being lost in thought.
There's something in every one of them.....Mischief was a tug of war......lol.....she gave me one last glance before rushing into the car just to see if I could get my shot.I loved her pose in ragdoll.....she was half bored- half hungry -half wanting to be clicked.
Rooz, thank you!! You are one to really brighten my day with your unreserved acknowledgement.
Kev.....yeah I fear she will...;):)....I'll keep the boys warned.......lol....
Viky.......absolutely agree.......there's so much beauty in that artlessness!!

Great shots, lil'! "Mischief" just made me smile. What a classic moment. And Ragdoll seems to capture some of her mood. I've seen that position often :)

great series of photos bella. i bet they cheered you up. :) fern especially has beautiful light, DOF and composition, well done.
another thing...either your PP skills have improved out of site OR notice how when you have plenty of light the colour and sharpness just "happen". the sharpest pics you have put up yet.
Your pass shot is really good. Congrats chili

Very good work, Lilchilichoco! Nice to see you're still growing and improving. Keep up the good work, 2PDG! :)
A little comment on "Red": Maybe the composition and effect would have been a bit better, if you had placed the girl more to the right in the frame? What do you think?

Hi Wesan, you've been missing!!! Glad you like the pics. I have to learn loads!!
About 'Red'......towards the right doesn't work for me......she IS the red.....she has to be the center.....it's the red, against the sea. I don't know how to explain it....if she was just a girl standing alone without that red....maybe.....no maybe even then, I like her in the middle.:).I want you to see HER, not the sea.....
I don't post something unless I'm convinced I like it:).....but it's good to get another perspective. Keep dropping in!! I like to hear from you every now and then.
Rooz.....I'm taking Bella as my official nick!! Feels good!!! Yeah I noticed about the light;).....these are PP'd....but not too much. I'll work on my learning 'light'. Thank you!! You are wonderful!!
Kev.....thanks!! Howz your amazing balcony? :)Saw some shots....beautiful as always. hope both your hot babes are doing good;)!
toriaj, thanks. So glad you like them:)...
Prospero, thank you!! You are the master of landscape! Thanks for stopping by.

I usually, actually almost always, dislike shots that are perfectly centered, but I think you are right with "Red." I think it works, well done. And good for you for sticking to what you feel works. This is your art. I think the important thing about this forum is to, of course, listen to everyone's suggestions and take them in, but ultimately decide what is best for you. I really like "Pass" too. Keep posting.

Hmpf...well...that's what you think! Hehehe... Just kidding! :D
The reason I thought it might be better, placing the girl more to the right, is that she is turned to the left. She is looking to the left. That, to me, makes "the direction of the picture" (if there's anything called like that...? :o) going from right to left. If you see what I mean? I think she would still catch your eyes, even if she's placed a little more to the right, because her red dress stands out from the rest of the picture. Just my thoughts about it. :)
But zmikers is right, of course - it's YOUR art and you decide how it should be. And I like your decisions so far. :) Well...except for "red", then, maybe... :p ;)

Wesan I do agree with you too;). And Like I said before I would almost never put the subject smack in the middle, I just think that in this case it works. It would work your way too. Beauty of art, there's never one "right" way to do anything!

Thanks zmikers:)
wesan...:)......one more reason why I placed her where she is....I found this lovely girl in this beautiful red dress at a beach and she was waiting for someone.....she was kind of unsure and a little lost....maybe a little sad.....and to me....the way she stands...like in the middle of somewhere....conveys exactly what I saw....the wait.....if I put her to the right......the communication would be of her looking out at the sea......except that she wasn't. To me it communicates "her" mood. Lol......I'm pretty stubborn. But it's really good to hear from you:)....please do come by and tell me what you think will work....maybe one of these days I will see it your way;)

Vich, I have a really crappy kit lens with which I got this shot and I am hoping you aren't making fun of it:). This is a mirror shot, at f/4.5,ISO 1100,45mm. The light was really low, so I expected the shot to be dark. I pulled up the exposure a wee bit and adjusted curves. There are other variations with more and stronger pp, but I liked this one.
Kombizz,thank you.
Well....I am big league now:cool:......I gotta kit;)...lol.....
Rooz, yeah, I am so bitten.....:)......I really want to see how filters work, got them for the Tamron. Will post some soon.
toriaj, thanks and I'll show you some right away...:)
vicky, sweet girl from India;)...thank you and yeah, I manage to bully a good man into calling me from Adorama and scream, "You should get your stuff yourself!!!"........lol.........we must've fought a dozen times in the space of a very tense half hour:).....coz he hates to make all this effort for something he couldn't care less about,(either wife or photography, or both ;))......he couldn't find the lenses that I wanted.....I didn't want the ones available..........but true to the proverbial 'man', he'd have hated to come empty handed......lol....very thrilling, intense drama at adorama led the smartass sales guy to tell my harried hubby..."your wife speaks too much".......lol.....I was trying to tell him the EXACT lens I wanted. So much for clarity.
Funny, these infuriating little instances are perfect examples of how even though your husband hates to spend those dollars on something he really doesn't care about, and even though you are so mad you'd divorce him right there on the phone and told him to just forget you ever asked him to get your stuff and slam the phone, he still gets you everything he is able to.
Yeah, I do have a caring husband.
He cares about the alimony;).

LOL:D:D
Its so true. People find it very difficult to rationalize spendings on things "they" don't care about. Look at my example for instance, before getting my DSLR i had a really hard time explaining to my wifey the logic behind spending on a new camera inspite of already having a "perfectly working" camera. And, when i finally got the stuff from Thailand, although i had spent 60k Bhat in total, i got a dummy invoice made of 18k bhat to show her;) Coz, if she come to know that i have spent this much on a 'camera' she would shoot me:D
Till date she belives this stuff is only worth about 23k INR:):)... I just pray to God that i don't get a call some day from her say, "darling i just earned you 10k... i sold all your cam stuff for a cool 35k":eek::eek:

Wow. Beautiful, lil'!!! I love "Posing." It might be my favorite picture of her so far. I love how "All Smiles" has just the face in focus. And, what beautiful lighting on "Profile!" I also like the shots of you. The first one is much different than the others I've seen, much less saturated. I love how your eyes are the star :)
Rooz.......I ADORE this lens:)!

06-21-2007, 12:14 AM
Hi again, Lilchilichoco!
Profile is very nice. Posing is nice also. In Girls, it looks like you captured a moment. Also a nice picture.
Friends...Uhh...I better ask first, this time, before I comment on it ;) - was it your intention to have the "friend" to the right a little out of focus?
Aperture 1.4 is a very large aperture, which makes the depth of field very shallow (right word?). I might have liked a little bit more depth of field in a couple of the pictures, maybe. Like Friends and maybe Profile. Although, I'm not an expert on portrait photography... :o
Still, very nice pictures as always, 2PDG. Keep them coming. :)
BTW, I have read some more about the Pentax K10D...and this is very hard for me to say...as a "Canon man"...but here it is: The Pentax K10D seems like pretty good value for the money. Whew! That took an effort! :p
"profile" is perfect. i agree about "friends", it could have been at around f4 or even higher to get all 3 in focus. with f1.4 you need to get em all scrunched in together and just as importantly, keep the distance from the lens the same.
Lilchilichoco
06-21-2007, 08:32 AM
Reg...kiddo....I was just pulling your leg..:).and you take totally awesome sports shots boy.....I agree 110% with Rooz....though I don't think D40 is any way crap:).
toriaj, sweetie, thanks a million!! You made me very very happy:) I am in love with that black and white of my daughter's.
Rooz,I am so glad I trusted you. Thank you so much! I would've been miserable had I not listened to you.:) {He said, "it's not the cam,it's the lens."}
wesan!! Hi! I'm glad you like the pics.:)
What has drawn me to photography and now is swallowing me whole:)....is the communication in a photo. So 'the moment' becomes paramount and all rules are subservient to 'the communication'.
In Profile, I have nothing to show you of the background. I want you to see only the girl. So more depth would not have worked for me.
'Friends' has been my learning in this set. I read up on getting the focus right in a group photo and as Rooz said, for that, all people must be at equal focal distance to the lense, or in other words they must all be in one straight row. My problem with this shot was....the light was very low, and the kids won't sit still. Just before I clicked, little girl on the right decided to throw her head back for some reason and so the blur.
Had she not moved, I might have got a perfect shot. But I wasn't after a perfect shot. I was after what these kids bring to a photo. It still doesn't take away much from the picture for me....infact, it got interesting with the contrast of statue still 2 on the left and middle and the animated 1 on the right.:)
I could not have used f/4 without decreasing the shutter speed that would have caused a blur, since this was a hand held shot. I didn't have the time to change the ISO coz these kids scrambled like mice in no time:)
So, under the circumstances,I still love this shot.:)
All these shots are split second shots, even though they look like set up shots. The brother and sister ones are my favourites coz there's just a blur to tell you of the sibling in the background. I liked that. The first was an accident. The second was deliberate.
'Girls' is another favorite of mine. I wanted to name it 'consider this...' coz these girls were considering something. I like the contrast of a sharp back with a blurred face.
And I am truly grateful to Rooz for telling me I need to get a faster lens. Because now I can do what I wanted to do with my cam - Shoot in available light.:)
Some more soon.
Best Regards

Absolutely beautiful, lil'! I love the expression on her face in #3. Is she about to cry? or holding in giggles? or just hoping that you'll put the camera away soon? :D I don't really want to know the answer, I enjoy wondering! One small thing about #2, many people would prefer a focus on the eye rather than forehead, although perhaps this is exactly the effect you were after. With such short DOF it can be tough to get the focus where you want it anyway :D It's a beautiful shot, and I love the B&W.

Hi tori and thank you so much. I am pleased as a punch with these shots. I love the fact that I can capture the colors the way I wanted.....sharp...alive....kicking:). I love toys for this reason. I love the colors in it and the sharpness. Straight out of the camera 50mm 1.4. What a Wow!! lens.
I was after that effect in no. 2. I tried to get another with the eye in focus but just couldn't get the expression right. I plan to make a large print out of this.:)

So there is Persia Court, China Court, India Court etc. Each court is architecturally and set-up wise representative of the region it portrays. This one's of the India Court. The ceilings are vast and simply magnificent! I forget shopping and just stand gazing at them. There are huge structures as well......like a life size elephant with the mahout sitting atop. Looks almost like a museum.
Beautiful place.

Thanks again

Here is a link that shows and explains HDR & tonemapping. http://www.hdrsoft.com/index.html Check out the examples and the user gallery. There is some amazing work there. I d/l the trial version. It puts a watermark on the image tho. There are a lot of good articles by googling on the subject if you get interested.
I would love to go to that mall, it looks amazing.
Take care and thanks for the compliment.

Beautiful pictures, Bella. The lighting is great.
If your interested in HDR, a couple of weeks ago I posted a tutorial on this site about how to create HDR pictures, which might be of some help to get you started. You can find it here:

35! Wow, I can almost remember when I was 35  . You are so right about life swishing past. Blink twice and your darling daughter will be walking down the aisle. Great shots and I hope you have a very happy birthday. You're still a youngster so yes, we expect some party pics;)

'lil, you outdid yourself this time! Every time you post new shots, I want to say, "this one is my new favorite!" I love that very last self-portrait, it's so mysterious. And what did you do to get the beautiful lighting in the pictures of your daughter? I love #4, the up-close with her eyelashes in focus. You really know how to bring out the beauty in your subjects.
Happy birthday, may your new year bring you happiness.

Rooz.......thank you. I said that when I read what you wrote. It made my day. What more could you ask for on your birthday than this solemn acknowledgment. Thank you.
Vicky, thank you !:) But no party....I went around taking pictures in the evening, most all of it. That's my high. Apart from singing, that is.
Zmikers, happy 30th birthday to you !! Thanks for your good wishes.
Dennis, Thanks so much for your good wishes. Looks like days are just disappearing into thin air as we move from week to week....month to month....year to year. You are so right......I so often look at my daughter and her stance and think....Gosh! This at 5....and before I know she'll be in that phase when she'd want to throw me away.....and then the walking down the aisle.....and my little bird will fly away from the nest. Funnily, her pet name denotes a small bird. Yeah life moves fast. We gotta catch up.
Tori, thank you so much:) The light was the bright midday sun from my wall length window so it was a lot of it. I have wanted to create this effect for a long time now but since I don't have a studio set up I couldn't. Then one day came the sun looking like this, so I got my daughter to pose and she was very relaxed that day. She is beginning to like being clicked:D....
I loved my last self portrait for that exact same reason.....:) So glad got my curls back...lol......
thank you for your good wishes!

Bynx, well, you have done exactly what I didn't want to do with my picture.
You have distributed the focus everywhere with the lightening. I wanted the viewer's focus on the string of lights. The movement in it. The traffic was the background. The ceiling was not to be highlighted for this very reason. It takes away the point of interest from the string of lights to the ceiling and then scatters it in everything else in the picture. The mood is totally lost. So, sorry but it doesn't work for me at all.

happy belated b'day.........:)
Well Lilchilichoco every pic submitted here is subject to at least two approaches. One is clarity and the other is artistic. When I lightened your picture I did it half as much as I would usually have done it. I wanted to see more details lost because of the darkness. However, I didnt want to lose the red tail lights and their refelection on the walls and the mood they created. I see your point, but I am interested in clarity AND artistic merits of any picture. I thought I did both. And there we have a difference of opinion. And its differences which makes this forum so great.

Bynx, the difference of opinion is not the issue here. The issue is you have tampered with the subject of the photograph. And consequently with the intent of the photographer.
Best Regards
Lilchilichoco I think you take yourself too seriously. Lighten up. I thought pictures submitted here were open to both praise and criticism. I offered my opinion, nothing more. I had no way of knowing what your intent was and only saw an underexposed picture.

Hi Tori. These people are manual labourers. They work with their families. They belong to villages and are poor and not educated. Yet, there's so much pride in them. As you can see in the Man photo. The Woman was posing for me...it was hellishly bright and hot that day. Her eyes look misty with that light. The sun is exceptionally kind to us in that part of the world. The little boy has a quietness in the eyes.A bit sedate for his age. It's sad how these little kids work to earn money with and for their families. But that's just how it is. Even if you offer to sponsor their studies, they'd rather stay with their families and work like this all their lives. And be proud of it.
Defiance and perseverance is something Rajasthan is known for. It is home to the Rajputs, the Kshatriya clan of soldier fighters. Our history is rich with their feats.

Bella - Great use of color.
#4 - I like the way you framed this one, especially how you used the broken out chunk of concrete to frame the stairs. Nice contrast of color. The handrail detracts a little, but not overly and don't think you could do much about it. Very nice eye on this one.
#5 - not sure what it is, but I love it. Love the different shades of blue. Print this one huge and frame it.

I have to disagree with you there. When you fully know that someone doesn't want edits, and this is not an editing forum, and yet you intrude, you are the one out of line. Why introduce a disrespectful environment? And yes, I think it's disrespectful (if not dishonest) to take Lil's image against her wishes, change it, and post it publicly. It is common practice around here to note if edits are welcome. And when posting an edit, noting that if the edit is not appreciated, you volunteer to immediately remove it. Blatantly creating and posting an edit against the express wishes of the owner is against the entire atmosphere and intent of this site as I experience it.
Please restrain yourself.
toriaj
08-12-2007, 04:04 PM
Bynx, what I meant to say is, that there are some people who like other people's edits of their pics. (Me being one of them.) But when you know someone doesn't, it's simply respectful to just go to the next thread. No offense meant.
Perhaps toriaj you could clarify something for me. What is the purpose of this forum? If its just a photo gallery to display work and collect pats on the back then this certainly isnt the place for me. I look forward to any criticism in any form for any pics I submit here. There is no cardinal sin to editing a file for the purpose of clarification. Any "fixings" Ive done were only meant in a helpful manner only and not meant in any way disrespectful to the photographer. Ive been confronted by both ends of the spectrum in this forum from the arrogance of "look but dont touch" to "thanks a lot for your help". I was hoping this would be a nice community with one thing in common at least, the love for photography. Please let me know if its just a place to display egos. By the way the first picture I submitted here was edited without my approval. It was an improvement of the picture and I thanked the person concerned.

Bynx--to me, the issue isn't your good intentions. It's that earlier in this very thread she clearly asked you to not edit her pictures, and yet you did it again. Regardless of whether or not you mind your pictures being edited, or whether or not I mind mine being edited, I think it's only common courtesy to respect her preferences.
So you are telling me this site is just a place for ego stroking and nothing more. I assumed that we were all here to learn something and perhaps even improve our talents. By posting a photo that means fair game to edit to demonstate a point of view. If no comments (other than praise and accolades) are to be made then whats the sense? If there is a problem with a photo then fix it and move on. Obviously the two pics in question were badly underexposed. But I guess the point I seemed to miss here is that this is all about ego stroking. If something is good I say so. If its not I also say so. Any one here who submits photos and doesnt like constructive criticism I suggest take up another hobby.
there is of course other options bynx. you could make your suggestions without editing the pics. ie: "bella, that photo looks a bit underexposed, i think it would look better if you lightened it up a bit." and let her make the decision of whether to change it or not.
we all have choices. you and i may be happy for edits but bella chooses not to have people edit her photos, which is her call. you in turn can choose not to post in this thread, which is your call. take your pick and leave it be i say.

So you are telling me this site is just a place for ego stroking and nothing more.
Perhaps some individual threads are intended for that purpose, and perhaps some of the posters feel that is the case. But on the whole, this site is for sharing techniques and learning.
By posting a photo that means fair game to edit to demonstate a point of view.
Technically speaking, each photograph is copyrighted by the one who took it. It's definitely fair to offer constructive criticism, especially if asked for it. And most people here, I think, don't mind having their photos edited in good faith. That being said, there are some on this site who prefer not to have their photos edited and reposted, for whatever reason, and though you or I might not agree with that, we should respect their request to keep hard feelings or negative reactions from arising out of what could be interpreted as disrespect or antagonism.
Personally, I appreciate when someone takes the time to edit my photos to demonstrate something that could be done better, but at the same time, if someone makes their preference known that they don't want their work edited, I'll respect that just to avoid problems. And I'll move on to another thread probably, though I'm not really just looking for other photographers who are edit-friendly. :p

Hi there, 2PDG!
Sorry to hear you got sick in London. Hope it wasn't too serious and that you'll soon be well again.
I've been away for a while too, but I'm back now. I still haven't quite got back into the habit of looking around the forums here regularly again, though...
I like the colour pictures! Number 1 has the colours of the Swedish flag - yellow and blue! :D I also like number 2. It has contrast in both colours and surface - the smooth yellow wall against the more rugged grey rocks (stones? pebbles? - sorry, not sure of the correct word...:o ). I like that. I like this kind of colour pictures. :) Have you done any post processing on them?
I had a feeling you had a lot of talent and pictures inside you, Lilchilichoco, when you posted your first pictures taken with your phone camera. But...it's just that you...never cease to impress me!
Just for your info D Thompson, since you got into this fracus a little late the picture you are looking at submitted by the photographer is an edited version of the picture I altered. In fact, I prefer her version to mine as well. I went a bit too far in brightening up the shadows. But in the edited version of the original I can now see the details of the railing etc that was completely obscured in darkness before.

Mate i'm not doing the private pm thing, i'm doing the straight up the guts thing. Mate as far as I can tell & say I'd have to be one of the bigger assholes as far as character goes here, nevertheless i have a hobby that is also a passion & i do it here at this site of which i think has a remarkable collection of very fine personalities. One of those personalities came upon us one day in the guise of a person with a mobile phone,( the gallery looks elsewhere & smiles):), she wouldn't be denied as she had found something that was relevant to her life & passion, something that without we are nothing! This person gave us a view from her phone that at first wasn't shunned but obviously it wasn't our world but nevertheless she pertained with this site. This same person has been a delight in personality, character & her desire in photography is second to none!! This person now has a thread of her own & to me it says to all of us here that have helped her "THANK-YOU", this is what I have got, this is my way from my phone to my camera & thank-you for getting me here, although i really think she will show a few of us up yet:( Mate it hers, let her be, she deserves it. This is a great site where there are no "ego's" of which you speak of, they don't last long here. Of all the photography sites that i have had the luck to find I'd rate this as the best & the main reason for me is that it's "civil", not to mention the talent here is as good as anywhere, it's just that we all get along at getting along. Peace mate, I'm not after a fracas, I'm just stating something about someone that was born & bred from this site in a miniscule way, so the bottom line is Lil,Lilchilichoco, Bella or any other name you would want to choose does have a right to option the non molesting of her photos.;)
T06, you finally force me to respond to you people. Exactly what have I done? I lightened up an extremely underdeveloped picture to bring out some detail which in fact the photographer also did herself. Im not questioning her integrity or skill as a newbie photographer. Im not poking fun or picking on her in any way. I saw a bad pic and I corrected it to a more visible state. I dont believe anyone should force a viewer to look at a particular part of a pic by allowing everything else to be black. Let the viewer look and see whats there. Now the matter of look but dont touch attitude. What is that? Even the people who are grumbling at me say they dont mind people altering their pic for clarification purposes. So why do you condone this Prima Donna attitude? Submitting pictures to say look at me arent I good. What is the purpose of that? Does she learn anything? The purpose of this forum is to share pics and ideas. Anyone unwilling to listen to an opinion here is definately in the wrong place and should take up knitting or mountain biking or some other hobby. Now I say to you people, get a life.
I dont believe anyone should force a viewer to look at a particular part of a pic by allowing everything else to be black. Let the viewer look and see whats there.
who's forcing you ?
Now the matter of look but dont touch attitude. What is that?
the matter of "to hell with it, i'll do what i KNOW pisses her off anyway." is far more of an attitude don;t you think ?
what really puzzles me is that you KNEW this yet you still did it. why would you do that other than to stir the pot ?
Ya I know. [she doesn't like to have her pics edited]. Ive met the wrath before.
Even the people who are grumbling at me say they dont mind people altering their pic for clarification purposes. So why do you condone this Prima Donna attitude?
we've been thru this b4 haven't we ? its member choice. its not condoning anything...its respecting.
Submitting pictures to say look at me arent I good. What is the purpose of that?
she's not doing that at all. she's sharing her pics.
Does she learn anything? The purpose of this forum is to share pics and ideas. Anyone unwilling to listen to an opinion here is definately in the wrong place and should take up knitting or mountain biking or some other hobby.
as i already said above. you could make your suggestions without changing the pic. then let her decide if thats what she wanted. that way you are sharing your opinion while still respecting her wishes. and the purpose of this forum is actually whatever the member wants it to be.
Now I say to you people, get a life.
"we people" are not getting snippy at you, we're simply asking you to respect the wishes of a fellow member. she doesn't like edits, end of story. whats the big deal ?
Rooz it seems to me that this whole big deal you people are making out of this is between Lilli and myself. Do you meddle in your neighbors affairs as well? Glad I dont live next door to you thats for sure. Talk about a mountain out of a molehill. But Im glad Ive been able to give you something to bitch about. If it wasnt me youd be doing it to someone else Im sure.

Bynx, my humble submission to you- please don't mess with a photograph if you don't grasp the intent and the subject. This has nothing to do with praise or criticism.
Yes. I do take myself and my art seriously,as I do others'. You should too.
Best Regards
Enough said on the subject. Could she be any more clear?
Even the people who are grumbling at me say they dont mind people altering their pic for clarification purposes.
For those that have said they don't mind edits, then feel free to go to one of their posts and edit to your hearts desire. I think most of us would have a clue if you wrote.........ceiling of tunnel a little dark, you might try to lighten............no shadow detail, looks underexposed........etc.
The time and energy you characters have wasted on this is absolutely amazing and really pretty funny. Keep it going. I thought this was Some more..... of the pics of Lilli. You have turned it into a circus of Some more.... of your rants and ravings. Who is going for a second or third round?

You know what’s the point of this discussion Bynx? No, not that Bella has a Prima Donna attitude, or that all my fellow photographers have some obligation to me, but the fact that it is the photographer’s right to present a photograph as he chooses. And respect of that choice by the viewer.
It may be underexposed,overexposed,out-of-focus or over-saturated. It’s his choice.
It’s plain rude to pick up someone’s work and change it to YOUR preferences and put it up proclaiming it to be a better version. It’s against civility. Especially when you don't have a clue as to what is the focus of a photo.
I wonder if you walk into other people’s houses and shift around their furniture and tell them… “ see, now it looks so much better”.
In the cloud photo, the railing is perfectly visible on my monitor, and visible as much as I want. And that’s my choice. It is perfectly within the photographer's right to let you see what he wants you to see. That is what art is about.
A photograph works if it communicates. It can communicate without being technically perfect. I care about the communication. I request you to respect that.
It might come to you as a surprise, but we all live in a free world. You can choose to see things you want and ignore the others.
Maybe it’s just that you don’t like my work. It’s technically such a failure. Leave it at that.
I request you to leave this thread and stop this rudeness to my fellow photographers.
Best Regards
Now I certainly hope that was the last word on the subject. I suggest you people get out and take more pictures and spend less time flapping your gums.:p

Bynx, the people you are being so disrespectful of are amazing photographers and their pp skills are way beyond your 'lightening' skills. I suggest you go out and use your camera instead of spending your days in 'editing' other people's photographs which is all I see you do here.

Nice colours. I like number 1, 3 and 5. The use of lines and the warm colours in 5 are great.
I don't really like the second and number 4. In the second, I find the rubbish on the floor distracting; in my opinion 3 is a much better portrayal of this building. Picture number 4 I find a bit boring.
By the way, I noticed you shot most of these in ISO1600, while that was not nescessary.
where are these pics taken btw ?
Lilchilichoco
08-26-2007, 05:56 AM
Tori, drama, Prospero, thanks:).
Prospero, I hate that litter in the second, couldn't do much about it,except maybe I should've gone down there and removed it before I took the pic. Then I'd have lost whatever light there was. It was evening and the light was fading rapidly. Hence the ISO 1600, seems like a sure way to get a shot in low light. But I did like the curve of the yellow wall, the contrast of green and the hint of blue.
Red, well, yeah, not much there except the niche which was actually a window. I wish I had something to contrast it with.
No. 5 is my favorite. I'm glad I could capture that dreamy glow. Yes Tori, that's the texture on the pillar.
Rooz, this was the place I was staying at in London. It was a fitness center-cum-hostel that was done in red, blue and yellow.
Some of these shots were taken in rather umm...strange circumstances....I was very uncomfortable having just got back from the hospital, but I had to get those shots. So I tried my best.
Thanks for looking.

Lil,
It is obvious that you have a passion for your work, but passion by itself does not guarantee growth. The inability to accept criticism as demonstrated in your dealings with BYNX shows you feel insecure about your work. The mere fact that he felt your work could improve, and ultimately his very presence became a threat to you. That is very sad. An attitude like that does not lend well to growth and improvement.
You said something to the effect that you take yourself and your work seriously, and so should he. That is exactly what he did. He took it seriously enough to take the time to do what I believe he truly thought was an improvement to your photos. There was no malice in his actions.
And to your friends, who so eagerly jumped on the bandwagon to bash BYNX, perhaps if they took as much time as BYNX did in looking at your photos and less time coming to your defense about your photos, they could truly help you develop skills and perspectives you might not develop on your own.
Think about when you were in school. Wasn't it the teachers who were the most critical of your work the ones you learned the most from? I know that was the way it was for me. It is very easy for people to say "Lovely" and "Nice job", and while it feels good, what good is it really doing?
Lil, all I am saying is be open to others opinions and comments, even if they are not what you want to hear. Your work is good, there is no reason for you to feel defensive about criticism. It is merely another person's opinion.
I truly hope you do not take offense at this. It was not meant to offend, but hopefully to enlighten.
Sincere regards,

Wow. You're new here, but I'm gonna assume that you actually read the posts you're talking about. In that case, you should have understood that the issue wasn't that Bynx criticized her work, but that he altered it, after being clearly asked not to. I've yet to see Bella have difficulty dealing with critiques. She's extremely gracious in response to positive comments and quite open to constructive criticism. And since when is calling someone on their behavior considered "bashing"? I think the whole exchange was pretty civil. There's obviously a strong difference of opinion about when it is proper to edit other people's pictures, but no one ever said that Bynx was being malicious or capricious. Oh, and also, I like how you're able to psychoanalyze her from her forum posts. Nice trick.

You ignored all those 'photo galleries', 'which cam should i buy' threads that newbies are generally attracted to. You come straight to this thread and write in a pretty long message in defence of BYNX. The last thing any new member would do immediately after joining a new community or forum is pick up a 'fight' with a large no of regular posters in that forum. And this is exactly what you did.
It seems there's too much of a coincidence here:rolleyes: It seems like you JOINED this forum for a predefined purpose:rolleyes:
I thought you were smarter BYNX. sorry, i mean robleemom:p
Glad I wasn't the only one who thought this!
As far as Im concerned I considered this a dead issue. You people should know by now I speak my mind and dont have to use any other name to do it. So Viky, a.k.a. Dickhead, when you accuse someone of something I suggest you get your facts straight. It is one thing to think it but another to express it. So now prove it. Im sure the administrators of this site can check IP numbers or some other means to show that Im not the author of that post. Now how about getting back to minding your own business and let Lilli do her own talking or ignoring. And that goes for the rest of you bozos.

Here we go again!!!
Bynx, your capacity for rudeness and name-calling is unprecedented on this forum.
Now to Robleemom.
You can find something technically wrong with any photograph. I could pick up any photo and sharpen it, lighten it, saturate it, de-saturate it ….but I don’t.
Why don’t I do it?
One, because I would never pick up and edit someone’s work without his express wish. Particularly someone I don’t know. That’s the respect I give to others and I expect the same.
Two, because if the photographer’s idea comes across crystal clear, technical details become secondary. The idea is important to me.
Three, because I do not consider myself an authority on photography.
So , again, it has nothing to do with praise or criticism. I am sharing a vision, a thought, an idea. See if you can relate to it. You think a picture’s not working, tell me….tell me how you think it will work….or work better….show me a new technique….tell me if I’ve not done justice to my subject……but lightening?
Both my shots did not ‘need’ lightening. For the first, I clearly stated why the lightening did not work with my idea of the subject and it’s representation. It struck me after the second edit that this person has probably not even taken the time to actually ‘see’ what I had shot…..he just looked at something and decided it needs to be lightened. I am generally surprised by people who have this compelling urge to technically right a photograph without a thought to the spirit of it or the idea contained. If the idea itself was defeated due to a technical wrong it would be understandable, but lightening?
I am an absolute amateur who has miles to go in learning my camera, shooting techniques and post processing skills. But I do have a vision. Please do not think my request to treat my work with respect that I give to other people’s work is any kind of insecurity. It has to do with courtesy.
What is sad, is that you have completely missed the point of the discussion, and in the process, have also conveniently ignored how Bynx became the epitome of rude behavior, the kinds I have never seen on any photography forum. Everyone has put forward their thoughts in the most dignified manner and that decency has met with such immature and utterly disrespectful replies from Bynx I wish he had never visited this thread.
Best Regards
You call me rude and at the same time condone your friends in accusing me of coming in here under another name (Roblemom) to accuse you of things. If there is any name calling here its only an escalation of the stupid remarks by these meddlesome bozos. This whole thing was between you and me and all this gum flapping was quite unnecessary. And this was all over a visual opinion. So who is the rude one here?
Robleemom
08-30-2007, 09:17 AM
Lil,
Thank you for your response. I am surprised that you are as much an amateur as you say you are. As I stated in the previous posting, your work is very good. I am even more an amateur, but I will eventually post my work on this forum. But my philosophy is a little different. I want as much input as I can possibly get, whether in the form of verbal instruction or altering my photos. I look forward to seeing things from a different perspective. I do not believe that altering a photo diminishes the validity of the original in any way, shape or form. If I can learn something from another person's viewpoint, then I am all the better for it. That is the point I was trying to make.
I am not defending anyone's rudeness, nor would I. You have strong supporters and friends, and thats a good thing. But I believe they have done you a disservice by getting involved. By the looks of it, you are very good at getting your point across. To me it seems that their involvement did nothing but put BYNX on the defense and then the offense, and from there came the rudeness.
And to your friends, I can assure you I am not BYNX, never have been and never will be. You do not have to join the forum to read the threads and that is what I have been doing. I would have joined eventually when I was ready to post some photos. But as I read and reread this thread I was motivated to join for the purpose of communicating with Lil. I thinks she is missing opportunites for growth by not being open to whatever ideas others have. This is just my opinion.
Best regards,
Robleemom

Robleemom,
If you’ve read the entire thread, I presume you would know exactly where this all started.
I had asked Bynx to not edit my photographs. When he did it a second time, he was asked very politely not to. To which he answered very brashly. That is where everyone spoke up. And Bynx just continued to be ruder in each post. Still no one has called him any names.
My friends who are my mentors in many ways, I am honored to be stood by, by them.
They only spoke up when Bynx refused to accept that member choice should be respected.
I respect your opinion about getting your work edited, I expect you to respect mine.
Best Regards

Excellent work! The 5th one is my favorite.
The grainy effect is probably caused due to the plastic windows...I love no#6.
P.S. I don't think the full white boarders on the 1st 4 photos are adding much to the picture.

Thanks r3g! I love that one too. Looked like cotton spread in the sky.
Viky, I like to use white with sky shots coz I find white intensifies the feeling of infinity. Here, I was keeping the idea of ethereal with the white borders, though they do seem to be merging with the background. And 6 is my fav too.

Lil', what AMAZING skies! I'm glad you captured them! I might have thought, no, that won't work out and not taken any pictures. But they are incredible. My favorite is #6. Hi everyone. Sorry for the late response. Saturday is holiday in Dubai and hubby decided 'no computer'. :(
Tori, I have had a couple of flights in utter frustration of not having my camera by my side. This time, while coming back from London and then to Dubai, I said, "I am going to get those skies"....and I am so glad I did. It's this truly heavenly beauty, the surreal-ness of it that captures me every time. Thanks and I am really glad you liked them.:) The sky in the 6th was really amazing, like someone spread little pieces of cotton wool in space!
Drama, thanks. I think the spot might be in the window of the airplane. You think I can remove it? Would you tell me how I can do that?
Adam, believe me it is the painting like scenario that inspired me to take these shots, and I'm glad they do actually remind you of paintings. I totally adore the lighting. I have longed to be a painter of still life and heavenly skies, but I don't think I have that streak in me. So this is the closest I get. Thanks so much.
Rooz, your unbelievable orange Australian skies have mesmerized me every time you post a shot. I know you may not like these too much, but I'd love to get a large print of some of these:).......puts me up there again each time I look at them.
Dani, that is the part of flying I love too...apart from the take off...the moment you leave the ground and into the air....my gosh!! I get excited like a little kid:D. Thanks and I'm glad you liked these.
Thanks so much for looking.

Drama, thanks. I think the spot might be in the window of the airplane. You think I can remove it? Would you tell me how I can do that?
You can tell that the spot is not on the window, because it is in exactly the same spot in the pictures. It's a piece of dust either on your lens or inside your camera. Never fear, I have much worse in my camera right this second :) The spots aren't hard to remove. Try Clone Stamp, Healing Brush, or Spot Healing Brush. I've heard that Smudge works, but I've never tried it. Here's a tutorial, it's not that great but it's the best one I found. http://www.hoothollow.com/Tip-July%202006%20Effective%20CLONING.html

Adam, mwwaah to you:) It's good to be back!
Gintaras, Toriaj is the master of waterfalls. My settings for this one were
18mm, 1/6 sec, 3.5, ISO 800. It was a test shot, like "let me see if I can do this".:). There's always "let's see how I do next time" :D
Tori, it always amazes me when I see your technical conversations and how fluidly you take up things in Photoshop. You are my inspiration.
Those vases were tall, but they were also displayed on a table in a hotel lobby. I fell in love with the colors the moment I saw them. It was also one of my first Raw shots, so that's another baby step for me. I wasn't having much success with Raw. I have the sepia one on my desktop now, though I adore both versions.
Some more soon!

Welcome back "in business", 2PDG! Nice to see some more pics from you. :D
Nice pictures of your daughter. I like mostly the one, where only she is in colour. It makes you focus on her. At least it makes me do that. The one where the background is in colour instead, makes me notice the background more. Colour stands out from a grey, or black and white, background. :)
That's also why I like the picture, where the flowers in the big vases are in colour. Yes, they have nice colours.
Waterfall pictures like yours, where the water looks so soft or silky, are always beuatiful. Maybe you could try an even longer shutter speed, to make it look even softer?
Well done, Lilchilichoco! Nice to see you back in action! :D

Thanks wesan!!:) It's always good to hear from you too! I'm glad you like the pics. My daughter's were experiments....you are right, the color background does strike first before the image of the child does. Sort of defeats the purpose. I put it up as a variation.
I have yet to experiment on waterfalls. This is my first and only shot. So I'd say more like a fluke. I am longing to try long shutter speeds with waterfalls, when I get the chance to. Most of my shots are either out of a moving car or totally impromptu shots. So I don't really get a chance to experiment much. Must remember to wander off alone once I learn how to drive.

LOL I guess I was still thinking about the waterfall shot, because I thought you had typed "DIVE"! :D
Anyway, you're welcome. And if you want to try longer shutter speeds for waterfalls, or any other kind of subject, remember you will probably need a tripod. Image stabilazation helps you a bit, but only so much. With longer shutter speeds, you will still need a tripod. But maybe you knew that already and even have a tripod too?

I don't think Welcome has motion blur, I think it's DOF. Even at f/11 a couple of inches will make a difference. But I love the sharpness in that shot, and many of your other flower shots. Great work!

Hi and thanks everyone!!:) Creator 1 is my art shot #1. I am really glad you have liked it. Hang is my next favorite.
Viky, you are right 'Basking' is blown out in the middle. Perhaps lacks contrast too. But I still liked it.......it's difficult to choose between your babies......I try my best:). 'Welcome in' is a DOF thing like Tori said. Should've stood away a little.
Gintaras, thanks so much...I'm really glad you like my stuff. I love your compositions.
Adam, Thanks:).
Tori, nothing makes me happier than being able to produce a really sharp shot.....I guess the blurry camera phone images still haunt me..:). Thanks so much!
Rooz, I will:)!!
Thanks for looking!

You got some good shots there! A few I'm not so fond of for different reasons, but..........
Hang - I don't know what it is about this image, but I really like it. Nice framing with the diagonal wire coming into the frame and then the rest of the piece being just slightly off center. Might be interesting to bring out just a little detail in the piece just to show a hint of texture. Works this way too tho!
Creator (#1) - yep, count me in with the rest. Beautiful job on lighting. You gotta print and frame this baby. The fact that the body is total shadow and all you get is the hands and the pottery piece is what makes this one so much better than the other 2.
Creation - I can't put my finger on why I like it, but I do. Nice job on the sepia tone of this one. I'd also like to see it in a more b&w version.
Keep 'em coming there kiddo and need to throw in a self portrait from time to time too. Take care.

Hey Grampa! How did you know I was processing some self portraits just this moment:)?.....Can't keep out of love with myself too long;)
Thank you so much! Those are my exact favorites and I'm really glad you like them. I love my paper roses too:D....though it might not have appealed to most people. To me...they brought dreamy peace. Not all my shots are like-able...I know.....some work....and some are...well.....just shots:).
I'll put up a black and white of "Creation". Sepia, I think, is capable of creating a certain timelessness with an edge of nostalgia, a hint of loss, trifle stronger than black and white.
My shots are make-the-best-of-the-opportunity shots. Most of them. This shot was a flash shot. I tried the best I could to translate it into what my eyes wanted to see. I'm really glad you like it.
Creator 1 was THE shot....because I could say what I wanted to with it. The rest fell short...but I put them up as part of a whole.
I love 'Hang'. I'll admit it unashamedly:). What I like about it is the contrast of a stark dark figure and the sudden medley of blurred colors right behind.
Thanks again Dennis. Means a lot to me.
Take care

Haha, Grampa's just know these things ;).

You're welcome. Sorry, I just wasn't crazy about the flower shots, but as long as you are is all that matters. Yep, some work and some are just shots - I know that feeling too! That's the fun tho and wow, did you get one with Creator!

Nice definition of sepia and it definitely has its' place and can make a photo jump at times. Still, I'm a sucker for a well done b&w. They just draw me into them it seems. It's funny, because when I first looked at Creation I wasn't fond of the sepia tone at all. The more I looked at it the more I liked the sepia. I'm still curious what you'll do with it in b&w tho.
Creator 1 was THE shot....because I could say what I wanted to with it. The rest fell short...but I put them up as part of a whole.
It was interesting to see the other two, but all the elements came together in the first shot.

Couldn't agree more!
Thanks again Dennis. Means a lot to me.
Anytime Kiddo, and thank you too! It's interesting to see your progress. You've come a long way since post #1. Take care.
