Well, I went and looked on the site I purchased my digital camera from and I found they have some cheap DV cameras for sell.

So what do you think? I don't expect the quality to be great but if their better at taking vids then my digi cam I will be happy.

Any thoughts on the subject?

The only DV there is in the model number. They are not camcorder, they are cheap digital still camera (they do shoot video too, but not great quality: 640 x 480, 12 fps) almost every other camera is either as good or better than these cheap things.

Also, note that there is no optical zoom, and the lens is probably nothing crazy.

Stay away from that junk!

Any thoughts on the subject? These cameras are designed to look like DV cameras, but sadly, they do a poor job both for DV (either low resolution, or at higher resolution, low frame rate), and for still photos, with digital-only zoom. They generally quote a camera resolution larger than the actual CMOS sensor. Spend the same money to go to a few movies, you'll get a better bargain! If you do scrounge up enough to get a good DSC with a better video capability, the Canon PowerShot S1 IS comes to mind with its 640X480 resolution at 30 fps, with the ability to zoom while shooting movies. And, it has a 10X optical zoom with image stabilizer. Worth saving for?

I looked at all the "DV" cameras on that page. They're all pieces of trash that probably fell out of some Chinese cornflake packet.

Do not waste your time on looking at them nor your money on buying them. Rather, if you're dead set on spending $165, give it to the nearest drunkard you can find and you'll have just as much pleasure from watching them drink it all as you would from viewing the pictures taken on them.

For $165 (the most expensive) you can *almost* buy a proper camcorder. Do that instead. I investigated all those pocket DV cameras and declared them all to be trash, myself.

I have the Canon S1 IS and to my mind, it's a lot better camera. My one desire would be that it could take MPEG4 videos rather than AVI.

There's a golden rule you have to follow: if it looks too good to be true - it is. Don't waste your hard earned money.
