I've got you beat - I've had my D40 for a month and a half, and have taken about 7200 shots.:p
(making you regret saying that any comments would be appreciated)

I've heard that the D70's is rated about 50,000. Some fail earlier, some fail much later....depends on your luck.

I talked to a local independent authorized nikon technician and he was saying that he has seen many d70's go well past 100,000 without shutters failing and he also mentioned that shooting a lot of continuous shoots is really hard on the shutter due to the fact that the shutter is subjected to vibrations for longer periods of time than single shots. He also said that he has done many repairs on d80's but has yet to have one that has had a shutter fail, well past 50,000, however since he is an indy he hasn't seen quite the volume of camera's that are sent directly to nikon. I have about 19,000 on my d80 and I am not worried about the shutter failing, I figure by the time it does I will get a new model anyways.

Assuming the shutter does fail, what is (roughly) the cost of the repair vs. a new body?

My D70s just rolled over again about a week ago (starting at DSC0001 again) for the second time. So I've got well over 20,000 shots on it and I've owned the camera for about 8 months now. No problems with the camera so far. I do run the shutter a lot, though. I suspect mine will crap out at some point from beating the hell outta it (I work for a magazine doing photos).
At the rate I am going, I'll tell ya in another year and a half :D . But I bought a little warranty to cover me for 5 years. I am gonna run the hell outta this D70s. Its an aftermarket warranty.
I have heard that the D70s and D80 are rated at 50,000~60,000 shutter life. However, I think most people get tired of their camera before that and get ride of it/replace it.

If I remember right when I talked to him he said $250-350 (the range is from my memory and not the exact dollar amount he gave me but I know it was in that range.).
