View Full Version : What does SD stand for on some of the Powershots

Just curious......never knew what the SD stands for....such as SD630.

When they started the series, it was for SD cards. The Canon S-series took CF cards.

Now that most of the Canons take SD cards, who knows? It probably doesn't stand for anything at this point.

I'm pretty sure it stood for the kind of memory cards they take; SD cards in particular. I think they decided to name it that way to differentiate it from the then more popular memory card format, the CF card.

Also, there is the "A" series where people say that it was so named because it uses AA batteries.

Now, the model names are so convoluted and confusing. :D

oh cool, i was wondering the same thing, as i have a canon sd, lol.
i thought the answer would be more complex than it's use of sd cards, haha.

SD seems to stand for Small Digital, where as the A series of canon (like A630 or A710 IS) are the AA Powered cameras.

Thats about it, no fuss, no muss
