When I set my S3 to AV mode, I can't get shutter speed longer than 1 sec. No matter how small I set the aperture, the longest shutter speed I get is 1 sec which makes it underexposed. Does anyone know why or how to enable shutter speed longer than 1 sec in AV mode?

Hello bertbert,
If you don't already have this link, it should help you. I have an S2 and I've got the link for it. It's a lot easier to understand than the owners manual. You should find what you need to know about all modes.

Interesting. I see you are right. I assume that exposures over 1 sec are just considered to be for special reasons and would be done in manual or shutter priority. The interesting thing I noticed is that because of this restriction, the exposure compensation being set higher would appear to have no impact at all, since it isn't changing the shutter or aperture... unless it is changing ISO if you were in auto-ISO, but I don't think it is. So anyway, it is possible in Av mode to seem to change exposure compensation but nothing changes.
Anyway, I think it isn't crazy for Canon to avoid extreme shutter settings in Av mode. It is easy to workaround and use shutter priority or manual mode.
