Hey guys,
I haven’t had a strong zoom camera before, and was wondering if there are any samples of zoom levels? [uhh… like the same picture but different zoom levels like 0x 3x 6x 10x 12x and so on.] and like is 6x zoom enough for the occasional concert or something while you’re right up the back?
I just want to know if 6x optical zoom is more than enough or just short.

I am looking at 6x zoom on the a710is and 12x zoom on the s3is.
For me, I rather the a710is, the s3 is bulky, and more expensive, but it has the 12x zoom on it. Im so frustrated on which to buy!!

Help me please~~~
:o

Hi,

Here's a review of the S3 with several test shots on wide and tele settings. http://www.digitalfunstuff.com.au/digital-cameras-review-canon-powershot-s3is.htm

The A710 lens starts at 35mm, the S3 starts at 36mm. In this case, they're almost identical so 3x will be mostly the same for both. With other cameras, where the lens starts at 32mm or 28mm, the multiplication factor won't achieve identical results. Just keep that in mind if you expand your search; it's better to use the mm equivalent when comparing lenses.

Here's a quick comparison I made for you. I had a better one but I deleted it a couple weeks ago.

This is approximate, but should be very close to accurate. Hopefully someone with an A710 will come along, but I used my S3 and went from it's widest angle and zoomed until the zoom display bar was ever so slightly before the half way mark. The last picture is at full zoom. (Through a fairly dirty window, don't judge the picture quality by these).

Edit: Looking at it like this, it doesn't look very accurate at all, as it would be 6x zoom from wide to mid, and from mid to full, and it doesn't look proportionate at all. Maybe I'll try again.

The page at the Ricoh r6 (my pick for a camera with good zoom under 10x) has a good demonstration of ranges:

http://www.ricoh.com/r_dc/caplio/r6/features.html

You can see that 35 is like the start of the S3 and 480 (digital in the demo here, but you get the point) is just a bit more zoom than the S3, and you can get an idea of the ranges overall.

I have a A710... let's be clear, it ain't no S3, but I was reasonably happy with the quality of this handheld "safety zoom" shot (@24x). http://web.canon.jp/Imaging/psa710is/fea-2-e.html
