A big disspointment if the stated specs are true..

- LCD is detachable
- 8MP
- Hot Shoe
- DIGIC III
- THE SAME 36-432mm specs :(
- The same 12x Optical Zoom.. :(

According to the thread its on Page on page 27 of the Ritz Blitz Summer 2007. Can anyone confirm this? If these specs are true then i think ill go for the H9..

What happened to S4?

I think 4 is an unlucky number in Japan so its not used...

I think even rebels like olympus and sony expected
(feared) a 16x zoom and much wide angle on the next 's' series from canon!

36mm is the widest it goes!? That sucks! I've been waiting for this thing for a long time, but it looks like I'll be switching to Sony now :( I was hoping it would go out to somewhere that is at least close to 28mm like my SD800.

I know it has an add-on wide angle adapter, but that thing is friggin huge. If I wanted to carry around a huge camera with lots of accessories required to change focal lengths, I would've bought an XTi.

Just curious but what are the benefits of a detachable LCD?

You can hold the camera in ways that you couldn't look through the viewfinder or see a fixed LCD and still frame the shot. This can be used for holding the camera overhead, low to the ground, at an odd angle, or pointed at the photographer. It's a really useful tool.

Not so sure about the #4 theory since they've got plenty of cameras with 4 in the title, S400, XTi is known as the 400D here in Oz...

And well, agreed, I would be more than willing to give up more reach for a wider lens almost any day of the week.

Finally though, it's got a hot shoe, and if it's fully compatible with my Canon flash, I'll be pretty happy (well, ok, it's far from perfect, but what camera is...). I've been talking to the Canon reps at every camera expo I've gone to to convince them that it would be great if they can add a hot shoe onto their ultra zooms (I mean, what's the point for me in zooming that close if I can't get enough light onto it 1/2 the time?), I wonder if someone actually listened???? Nah..... That would just be too good/easy to be true :P I guess now I can start hassling them about the zoom range (or lack of). Certainly doesn't hurt to try (though I find the reps here in Aust.'s Canon booth is less knowledgable and doesn't seem to care as much as the US ones).

Wouldn't that just be the swivel LCD like on the S3? When I read detachable it seems that it can be completely removed from the camera.

Can't say I'm at all impressed, or surprised. I'll either be going the DSLR route or h7/9 as an upgrade unless the face detection works as well as it claims (the auto focus and time consuming manual focus are the only thing I really hate about my S3, why can't someone add a manual focus ring to a super zoom?) and ISO 1600 is actually USABLE. Considering 800 is practically not usable on the S3, I'm not holding my breath.

I don't know where "detachable" came from. It has the same type of swivel LCD as the S3, just slightly larger.

It's the same lens as the S3.
