What do you want to do with it?

What accessories to buy depend a lot on what types of photos you want to take.

Some you can't go wrong with, though: a Lensmate adapater (52mm or 58mm) and filters (UV just for lens protection, Circular Polarizer for bright outdoors).

There are lots of options if you are into macro photography; both Raynox and Hoya make some nice lenses/filters.

There are a couple of options if you want to extend your zoom with a teleconverter, but I'm not sure which to recommend (I'm still doing my own research) but there's a number of threads about them, here....

Dire already touched on it but because I think it can't be understated:

Get the lens hood/filter adapter so you can protect that lens by slapping a filter in front of it. Beyond that, the piece of equipment I find myself wanting most for my new S3 IS is an AC adapter.

A guy on another forum bought the Canon power adapter from shentech online and it was very cheap compared to other places. He said it worked well and did not have problems with his order.

You would want the Canon CAPS700

Get the 52mm. I searched forever (a very useful feature, *hint* ;)) and found that 52mm filters are not only cheaper, but more compatible with some of the wide and teleconverter lenses you may or may not be getting into in the future. Plus I think it looks better than the flared-out end of the 58mm, but that's purely subjective.

Thanks for that VR. I was not aware that a 52 mm adapter was an option.

It is from Lensmate.

www.lensmateonline.com ;)

They have a good, informative site. They have comparison pictures, and some of the most frequently asked questions are answered as well.

Aside from the important adapters and protective filter, I think it is imperative to get a camera bag. Dont get the original Canon for the S3IS. Find a slightly bigger bag to fit your S3 with the adapter attached.

Another acc I deemed important when I started was a tripod. Even just the light and small one is OK. very good to take self photos or long exp shots.

btw, I have both the 52mm (from Raynox) and 58mm (Canon) adapters. 52 is better because it allows the use of cheaper 52mm filters. 58mm is for my Canon TC only.

Good luck

I'm searching the forum for bag recommendations.

I have a small bag now that just fits the S3 IS
but I'm getting a Nikon teleconverter and wide angle lense
and will want to get a macro converter as well, so clearly need
something bigger.

Any specific recommendations?

I too went with the 52mm adapter and my filters. However, then I had to get a 58mm adapter for my Sony TC and Sony close up lens. Until I got the Sony close up I was able to keep my 58mm on the tele all the time for a quick switch out. I did get the 52mm lenshood from LM as I was getting lens flare in very bright sunlight with my UV filter attached which I leave on all the time. Removing only when I use my PL or ND4 filters.

I am on my 2nd bag as the Tamrac I bought originally and loved just did not hold my camera with adapter, lens hood, rubber EVF eyepiece and tripod mount attached to the camera. I found a workable one for now from Targus at WalMart until I decide if I want one large enough for my lenses too. Right now I keep those in the Tamrac and if I want to take them with me I put them in a fanny pack bag so I don't have to carry anything except the camera and lens case which can clip on to the fanny pack.

Although I like both my large and tabletop tripods I really like my Canon monopod for quick and easy stability like when I was recently at the beach.
