downloading digital tape to computer

i have just bought a sony handycam dcr-hc14e
i have just attempted to download film from the digital tape onto my laptop via a standard usb. the results were poor (missing frames, no volume).

should i be downloading via my dv out or via a fire wire for better results.

when i download from my sony cybershot (memory card) i have none of these problems.

i am confused as to the whys and the solution.

any help much appreciated

This probably isn't the correct forum for your question, because it is devoted to still digital photography, but I'll give it a try. I have a Canon Mini DV camera, and it specifically says to use a Firewire port for downloading to the PC. It works very well for me. Give Firewire a try, and see how it works.

Firewire for Video

it's interesting to hear (more like read) what happens to a video when attempting to download via USB. I didn't even know it was possible. I wonder why the manufacturers dicided to force the use of Firewire for video instead of giving the option to use both Firewire and USB. i know USB might be too slow for many users, but hey, lots of people are still using Dial-up right?
