Okay, so I just submitted my order for the SB-600 flash, a diffuser, and the 50mm f/1.8 Nikkor.

They should be here Monday or Tuesday of next week. I'm still debating other lenses, but hey, I made a purchase! (That's a big step for me.)

Will let you know when I get them....

You'll love both the flash and the 50mm prime. Enjoy your new toys when they arrive!:D

Yay! You're going to love them all! NAS is a contagious disease....

Edited to ask - what other lenses are you debating??

Congratulations on your purchase. You're gonna love the flash. The results that can be had with an external flash are just so much better than those with the onboard flash. The 50 is great too; I have never used one, though.

Kellie,

Gosh, what other lenses am I debating? Right now I'm heavily thinking of the Sigma 10-20mm. Besides seriously thinking of getting into real estate photography, I just love landscapes. Then again, a lens with a little more reach might help with my kids. I'm trying to not go too fast though, lol. And I know I'll only be able to do one more soon. Then I really will have to wait for awhile. So I haven't decided which I need more, wide angle or more reach. (Didnt you just get the 70-200mm VR? How are you liking that?)

To add my $.02... I couldn't be happier with my new 55-200mm ED VR ($250). It's images throughout the focal ranges are just about as sharp as my more expensive 50mm 1.4 prime. The 55-200 actually replaced my 50mm as my walk around lens. I don't have much use for a wide angle so it suites me really well. Sample images can be seen on my Flickr site in my sig.

I did just get the 70-300 VR (not 200 - I wish! LOL) and absolutely love it. It actually even works quite well as a portrait lens outside. It has been on my camera for all of our daily walks/bike rides since I got it. I thought I would miss having a fast max aperture, but with enough light it's great for capturing the kids and the VR definitely comes in handy for still subjects. I really wanted the 300mm reach, but I'm betting the 55-200 VR is just as good and only 1/2 the price.

I'm also thinking I might want something for landscape shots while hiking/camping this summer, but can't decide if I would really like an ultra wide. The 17/18mm starting point would probably be enough. Although, the Tokina 12-24 is sort of tempting. I just wish I could try it first to see if I would really care for that range.

I have the worst buyers remorse ever, of anyone I know, and while I'm thinking I'll love the lens, now I'm wondering if I should have waited and bought a different one! Ahhhhhh! :o

you have absoutely done the right thing. both the things you bought i would consider indispensable. those 2 items will transform your indoor photos into something you never thought possible. and thats the truth.

there is no remorse to be had here. sure you coulda gone for the 50mm 1.4 and an sb800 but for the price difference you could just about buy the 70-300VR.

I completely agree. Both the SB-600 and 50mm are must haves. I still use the 50mm more than any other lens and for around $100 it's a steal! I used to have the D40 and didn't think I liked the 50mm. Now that know what it is capable of, I wouldn't recommend the D40 if just for the reason that this awesome lens won't AF on it.

The SB-600 is a life saver. You'll get nice photos when you would have only gotten washed out snapshots before. I know that buyer's remorse feeling, but definitely never had it for the 50mm or SB-600. You picked the perfect items. ;)

Thanks Rooz and Kellie. I appreciate the bolstering. :)

UPS tracking says they'll get here tomorrow. Of course, I won't be here tomorrow. Figures, doesn't it? I didn't think they'd be here before Monday at the earliest.

They are right... I remember not too long ago ;) , trying to nicely talk Kellie into getting a body that would autofocus the 50mm f/1.8:D - I am glad that she was able to do that, and doesn't have remorse!!!
