I found a website that is selling the sd600 new for $170. Is this the best deal i'm gonna be able to find on the sd600, or do you recommend waiting it out for another month or so? Do camera prices tend to go down over time or up (like some camcorders)?

If you want to purchase an SD600, you should probably buy it. $170 is a good price. This camera is no longer produced. B&H no longer lists it in their on-line catalog. It is possible that it will drop further in price but if you wait, you might not be able to acquire it at all.
My wife has an earlier version (SD300) and has enjoyed using it for the past couple of years. She loves it small size and ease of use.
Have a good day.

Yeah, considering it isn't manufactured anymore, the chances of you finding it any cheaper are slim to none. It's well worth $170. It's last year's model, but that in no way makes it a bad or cheap camera. There's no sense in waiting for the price to drop, and if you're not looking to spend the extra $50-150 on the current Elphs, you may as well go ahead and pick it up.

is there a big difference between the SD600 and SD1000? Does the latter justify an additional $50?

The SD1000 is the newer version. 7mpx I believe and the 600 is 6mpx. They look the same though.
If it comes down to money - just know that you will not be disappointed with the SD600.
