Hi,
New canon s3 owner needs a telelense especially for birding photos.
searched this site and found numerous advice ,not to use the Raynox
DCR-2020 ,2.2X.They only have a 1.54 Raynox DCR-1540PRO alternative
than the 2.2X.so where should i look for a 1.7X teleconvertor and
matching adapter?Thanks

Lensmateonline.com sells 58mm adapter tubes for the S3. The quality of their work is impeccable. To me, it's even better than the Canon adapter which is made of plastic. If you want to add a tele- or wide-converter, get the 58mm adapter. Link here: http://www.lensmateonline.com/newsite/S2.html

For the teleconverter, I'd go for the Sony VCL-DH1758.

I attach the Sony tele to the adapter first and then attach the unit (adapter+tele) to the S3.
Depending on where you live sometimes Office Depot online has a good price on the Sony lens. They list a canon adapter but it is the wrong one for the S3. I bought my 58mm adapter from LM and the lens from OD.

Forgot to mention you attach the adapter to the bayonet mount after removing the ring on the lens and then the adapter snaps on.

First, you remove the decorative ring from the S3's lens opening to reveal the camera's bayonet mount.

The lens adapter is a tube with one end matching the bayonet mount on the camera, while the other end is threaded and can be used to put filters and converters. Now, there are two "standard" thread diameters available to the S3 IS; 52mm and 58mm. If you plan to use a tele- or wide-converter lenses, get the 58mm. If you just need to attach filters like UV or a polarizer, the 52mm adapter should be fine.

The 1758 has a 58mm thread so you'll need the 58mm lens adapter.

Thanks oj88 and berniej for the information. But I just need some clarification.Rightnow I am in India and my sister at us will order the following
From lensmate

and
From newegg
VCL-DH1758 1.7X Telephoto Conversion Lens from newegg @ $104.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16830995022&ATT=30-995-022&CMP=OTC-yah00TT

I heard a talk about some step down ring in this set up, but I don't need a wide angle convertor his time.So all what I need to know wether I can fix the tele setup to my s3 by the above order. Please be specific because it will

Hi ooverdrive,

Ok, let me make it as specific as possible.

From Lensmate Online, get the Canon S2/S3 58mm (black) adapter for $24.95. The 43.1mm you mentioned is just the length of the adapter. 58mm is the thread diameter on the outer (bigger) end of the adapter and is the all important figure for your setup.

Then, get the Sony VCL-DH1758. This teleconverter (TC) lens has 58mm threads that will attach directly onto the Lensmate adapter above.

Finally, to assemble the components, the Lensmate adapter goes on the camera (bayonet mount), while the Sony TC goes on the Lensmate adapter (58mm thread mount). Simple as that. :)
