Someone recently gave me a Canon S2 IS camera they were no longer using. They said it worked. When I turn it on (to the left), I get the start up screen and sound but then the lcd/viewfinder are black. I do see the IS icon, a camera icon and the movie icon but the screens are black otherwise. Is there something wrong with the camera or am i doing something wrong?

Both screens (the flip-out AND the eyepiece) screens are blank?
Have you tried pressing the DISP button a couple of times to see if any of the LCDs start working?
One or the other (flip-out or eyepiece) should be working as soon as the camera starts up....

On the back of the S2 is a button labeled DISP for display. Pressing the DISP button will cycle the display through various modes. Try this and you should be OK.:)

I tried the disp button. it does not do anything but move those icons between the viewfinder and the lcd. They both stay blank except for the icons however.

I hate to say it, but...is there a snap-on lenscap on it?
Done it to myself a couple times.

And have you tried auto mode with the flash up? If you're on manual or a mode that let's you set the exposure way too low, the lcd shows what your picture will come out like, and in some cases that will be almost completely black.

No lens cap on. I have put it in auto mode with flash up too. I do have a question.
The current camera I use, opens the lens up for viewing even if I do not have a card in. It of course uses a compact flash card so I could not use it to test the S2. Does the S2 need a SD card in before it will open the lens for viewing on the LCD/viewfinder?
That said, I did put in a used SD card from another camera, it lets me view the pictures on the used SD card but when I switch to the other side, I still get the black screen.
How do I adjust the exposure? Thanks for all your suggestions

Unfortunately, I think its broken..... And you won't be able to get a reasonably priced repair on an S2 at this point. Better to invest in something newer.
It's likely a CCD problem. Unfortunately, having it repaired may prove to be more expensive than just getting a new one.
I would still hold on to it just in case Canon include it later to the CCD recall list (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=PgComSmModDisplayAct&fcategoryid=225&modelid=13390&keycode=2112&id=29819)

You are saying the LCD works for viewing photos but when you switch to on for shooting with a card in the lens does not extend and the screen is blank? Are you sure you are using fresh batteries?

Are you able to view your menu screen? If so try resetting the camera back to it's default settings and see if that might help. If that doesn't help then I'm afraid the camera is probably broken.
