After reviewing my Nelson Bay photos, it would seem that a spot is appearing in the same position of some of the photos (probably after a lens change).
Tests tonight confirm that it is not limited to one lens.

Does that mean it is the sensor ?

Looks to me like red paintbrush.
More serious note...maybe it's a dried water droplet. Have you done a wet clean with something like the CopperHill Method/Kit? It's just a spatula type swap + Pec Pad + Eclipse.

I have to look very hard to see it, but I think it is dust. Does it change in size and become more visible if you stop down (this is often the case with dust)?
If it is dust, you can easily clean it.

To me the spot looks more like a Pelican! Is this some sort of psychological test?
** and yes, it does look like a spec of dust on the sensor, and that it will get darker/more defined when you use a much smaller aperture against for instance the blue sky.
Blowers, wet swipe methods, or things like DSLRClean (tm) will be mothods to clean it from your sensor.
Because of the dust reduction system in your 400D you are not used to dust on the sensor... well, sometimes the dust is a bit more sticky and even you will get a spec of dust once in a while. Nothing to worry about though.

Yes, it is more prominent at smaller apertures.
I'll try giving it a blow job (so to speak :o ).

There's an even easier solution to this little problem...it's called the Cee-Dub Method...
