I keep getting different replies to this question, so I thought I would ask it here.

I need a lens for group photos - anywhere from 4 to 20 people. I know that's a big span, but hopefully one lens will do. Most of the time it will be outdoors, but I guess there would always be some taken indoors.

I have a 30D. At this time I have no plans to go to a full-frame camera.

Thanks!

What lenses do you already have?

you can use a Canon EF-S 10-22 and stand about 4 feet away or you could use a Canon EF 300mm f/2.8 and stand about 100 feet away. do you find that your kit lens is not wide enough? :) can you give us a bit more info, like forno said... what do you already have?

thanks

Sorry, I should have provided more info.

I currently have the following equipment:

Canon 30D
EF 85mm 1.8
EF 70-200mm 4 IS
EF-S 60 macro

Is this a good line up, or am I missing something?

Thanks!

Do you have nothing in the range of "wide"? 60mm is not wide!

Get something like the *gasp* Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 and stop it down to f/8 and you'd be good to go for a small group. f/10 if you want 'em 2 or 3 rows deep. Give or take.

you'll definitely have to step back quite a bit with the 60mm...maybe try out a kit lens, i hear they're pretty sharp at f/8. i would imagine 35mm would be ideal for what you need though to answer your question.
