I recently bought the Canon Rebel XT body only. I had a non digital Canon Rebel so I figured I'd just use my lenses from that since I had read that the Kit lens wasn't that great. Well, since I got the camera I've been having problems with an ERROR 99 message as well as every once and awhile I see a little shadow on the bottom of my pictures. I see that there are some Kit Lenses on ebay pretty cheap, should I get one of those and see if that helps me some?

The shadow you see on your pictures is likely from the lens or lens hood when using your pop up flash. If you can, invest in an external flash.

I don't know what would cause the ERROR 99 messages, maybe someone else can help.

Found this googling
http://www.richardsnotes.org/archives/2005/04/29/50mm-lens-contact-points/

It is apparently because of dirty connector points, I havent had the error & so havent tried the fix

Error 99 is an error that often pops up when a lens is not totally compatible electrically with the camera. Either it is an older 3rd party lens, or the lens contacts in the lens are broken, or the contacts are so dirtry they block the signals. So, what lens is giving you this problem?

And the dark shadow is, like mentioned above, the shadow of the lens being in the path of the flash.
