You definately need to get an slim one or you will end up with serious vignetting. The Kaesman style filters are considered the best but are pricey. The two brands worth considering are B+W and Heliopan.
(A friend game me a polarizer before my trip to Switzerland and I had to do a serious amount of cropping when I came home.)
Here is the short list to consider:

I totally spazzed with the polarizer- should have tried it before the trip. Aside from the light fall off problem it wasn't screwing into my lens properly so by the time I was able to get it on I didn't bother to do little things- like rotating it to the correct position.
Oh, and then there was the F-it, just leave it on move that didn't help a lot of my other shots such as the twilight shots where I could have used more light-lol. Shooting with the polarizer and no experience was the single biggest mistake I made shooting in Switzerland. Now I'm going to make another trip to capture it properly;)
$259 is low compared to the hundreds of less than ideal images my Free polarizer cost me. I don't think I'd go for anything less than the cheapest one on this list though. I'm going to be making the same decision shortly when I get back to shooting outdoors.

A circular polarizer has been on my wish list a long, long time, but I would think that grad ND, are more useful and cheaper. It isn't an option for your 10-22, but I'm hoping to eventually acquire some Cokin series-P filters. I know Cokin filters are pretty low quality, but if I don't end up using them much, I won't feel like it was a waste.

I use an ND grad with my 10-22 on a regular basis; I have a Hitech 2 stop rectangular ND grad and I hand hold it in front of the lens with no problems. Here is an example at 10mm from my Mexico trip (one that I haven't posted here yet!).....The rocks in the foreground would be nearly black without the ND grad.

I also use a CP on my 10-22, but you have to get a slim one; mine is slim and still it vinegettes at 10mm.
I order all of my pricey filters from this vendor in Hong Kong, who has unbeatable prices and a great reputation. He is also known as BestEastern on Ebay.

Here is my 10-22 at 11m with CP (I have the Kenko Pro 1, which many people say is identical to the Hoya Pro 1)....I've been happy with it.

A ND Grad and Polarizer have different uses; one would have a polarizer and usually a 1 stop and 2 stop ND Grad filter in their kit.
The ND Grad filter is just used when their is a big difference in brightness between the top of the frame and the bottom of th frame (usually sky v. land) where you don't want to be in the position of blowing out the sky's highlights if you properly expose for what's on the land.
As for the difference between the 1st two polarizers- the first one is extra wide and has threads on it, the second is 3mm thick and doesn't have threads for anything else (like a lens cap) on it- I believe. There may be more differences but I haven't spent that much time comparing them. W/o the ability to snap on a lens cap the alternative could be something simple like a lens hood.

I guess this rules out buying from Hong Kong on ebay.

Yea, I think it took about 2 weeks to get mine, but it was well worth the savings.
