In camera white balance or post processing?

A combination of school and computer crashes has kept my camera in the closet for a while, but I recently had a chance to take a bunch of pics at some family gatherings.

I usually set the camera on auto white balance, but this almost always results in pictures that are to warm. All of my pictures taken in low light have an extreme yellow cast.

This isn't a big deal to me, because it is so easy to adjust the tempearture with software, so is it really worth it to tinker with the cameras white balance settings.

Until now, I have shot everything in RAW, but this is probably more important if I shoot JPEG. I recently volunteered to photograph a robotics competition in a couple of weeks. I will probably shoot JPEG, because I don't think the event organizers have very high expectations and it will let me shoot away without fear of running out of memory.

i'd shoot raw anyway if i were you..

buuut, if you plan to shoot jpeg then take a white balance card and set a custom white balance before the show. make sure they set the lights up exactly how they will be for you.

Ok, but do you bother with white balance when you shoot raw? If I shoot raw, I have enough memory for about 600 pics, that is probably more than enough for someone with better shot selection.

Actually my shot selection isn't so bad, I just minimized my browser and looked at two recent sets of photos. The first set was as if I had unlimited memory, and the second set was taken with whatever memory was left over from the first. Overall the pictures in the second set were much better than the first set, but the first set had some great pictures I might not have taken if I had limited memory.

I already used this as an excuse to get a battery grip, and I could put $30 to better use than on a grey card.

I try to if I can. It's one less thing to fuss with later. I just know that shooting RAW means I don't have to sweat it if I don't get a custom white balance set.

i always shoot raw...and i still try to get close before so it's less work later. but i don't worry about white balance. hell half the time i forget to change it and it's left on custom....or K where i have it set to 5500k for my strobes.

i use lightroom though so i'll just sync all settings if the light is similar.
