I figure I'll eventually want a Mark III anyway, so instead of a new Mark II N for $3400, I got a second hand Mark II with ~5100 clicks for $2215 shipped & PayPal'd.

Now I get to await it's arrival...impatiently...

Fortunately it's coming UPS Ground from a 4 hour drive away so it should be Here Tuesday at the latest, assuming he ships Monday.

Thanks boog-er. I felt vulnerable with only 1 body so I figured I better get something before it's crunch time and I have to scrounge around or *gasp* pay too much for a week's rental. I thought the price vs usage ratio was good. Other Mark IIs with 15,000+ clicks that I saw were going for around $2500. Refurbs are $2500 plus shipping and no idea of the shutter count.

Hah. I thought about it, but I chose him paying for the shipping over me burning my own gas and tolls. :D

The seller won't be able to ship it till Monday so my bag doesn't technically contain it yet, but my lineup is/will be:

1D Mark II
1D
Sigma 12-24 f/4.5-5.6 EX HSM
Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L
Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS
Canon EF 25mm Extension Tube
2 x 580EX
CP-E3 Battery Pack
Meyer-Optik 135mm f/2.8 (15 aperture blades) M42 Mount
Lentar 135mm f/3.5 (12 aperture blades) M42 Mount
Lentar 28mm f/2.8 M42 Mount
Pentax 50mm f/1.4 M42 Mount
EOS>M42 Adapter

And a bunch of random stuff. I gave up the primes for now and Lensbaby for good (too gimmicky for me) but will eventually get L primes as/if needed and a Mark III when the jobs pay for it straight out.

I guess if you can shoot that with your manual focus lenses anything else has got to be easy by comparison;)

On another note, are you going to be in the path of tomorrow's storm?

I haven't paid attention to dopplar but we have a bit of rain right now. No idea how it'll pan out tomorrow. 100% chance of rain it says on wunderground.com but I don't know how bad it'll get.

Having dropped the coin for weather sealed camera's I'd expect you'd want to be standing out there in the Noreaster storm and snapping away to capture those images that weren't possible before!

I sold the Toke and cleared $439 on the deal, and bought a Sigma a couple days later for $450 all in. Not a bad cost of upgrade in my opinion. :)

Wow Don... that is a very nice camera you bought yourself! Only 5000 shots? what did the previous owner use it for?

You have gone through a LOT of quipement the last year... 2 XTs, 30D, 1D, now 1D mk II, and more lenses that I can keep count of. And your photography has made a big progression too!

You have a very bad case of hardware lust, young man :D 8 fps... I hope you will get a lot of enjoyment of this new tool!

Thanks Coldy. He's including an RRS L Bracket too which I can (and will) promptly sell, making it an even better deal for me.

He's a retired teacher who also has a 5D and a 30D that suit him better, so the 1D was seldom used. He mostly shoots macro and landscapes [click (http://www.naturescapes.net/portfolios/listimages.php?id=145&cat=11705&page=1)]. He didn't even have it explicitly for sale but saw my posts on FM trying to snag a 1D II and emailed me about his.

I have definitely gone through a lot of gear...but I'm losing very little in the process and not really wishy washing between stuff...ie I'm not going from 24-70 to 24-105 then back to 24-70 because the 24-105 was a mistake, etc. I figure each move is actually upwards rather than lateral, at a small cost. For example, I cleared $950 after selling my 70-200 non-IS after paying about $1200 before rebates. Rebates brought it down to about $1000. So all in all I lost ~$50 which is a tax write-off anyway.

I do admit to loving the hardware. But it does make a lot of things easier or better as well. Mostly just easier.

Take the atitude that whatever you aquire is sort of rented. Let's say you purchase a lens for $1200. 5 or so years later you can sell it for a $1000, presuming you bought something that will hold it's value well and you take care of it. That means your cost of ownership for 5 years was only $200 for a good quality piece of glass. Of course the $1000 you got will go towards something else, but no matter as it's just another cycle of rental/ownership.

It sounds like your ownship cost was relatively small for the gear you've had and with the current cameras you've now got, they'll hold their value, so in the end your cost to own them will easily be absorbed by the income from jobs you get.

The key is don't buy crappy gear in the beginning.

Also....
It's alot easier to tell the wife that the Canon L glass I just bought is really only costing me $200 :D
