Well I've had the 30D just over a week now and have just ticked over 600 images. Still learning heaps, hardest part is getting exposure right. Yes I do own a copy of Understanding Exposure but I'm moving house and it's packed in a box which is in storage until June!

So here's Week 1 with the 10-22 and 30D... Week 1 for me in the big bad world of DSLR photography :) Really need a bigger backpack so the 70-200 can come out with me too...

cheers

Great stuff all around but I really like the first one! Looks like you are getting the hang of it!

Very nice photos, especially the 1st one has a great atmosphere to it. And yes, the daffodils do work.

Nice work Gilly. Truth be told exposure is the hardest part of taking a photograph for me.

Very nice pictures. I really like the first two. The sky is great. Did you use filters / post processing to get the sky so dark, or was it really that way?

My thoughts exactly. And your girl is lovely and has a delightful smile!

Really nice shots. #1 gets my vote for best shot. Understanding Exposure is a great book. Beyond portraiture is another great (but often forgotten) title by the same author.

Thanks all for your kind comments.

No. 1 - Yes a little post processing - I've spent 6 years as a graphic artist so I know my way around photoshop. Just gave the sky a bit of punch using levels then blended it back into the original - bottom half of the pic is basically straight off the camera. Actually I'm thinking this will be my first enlargement.

As for Sarah's smile - I love that pic as it's one of those unplanned pics I just captured the right moment. I just blew £2500 on a 30D/70-200 f/2.8 IS/10-22mm and Sarah's STILL smiling!! I had to capture that!

And yep aparmley, exposure is THE tough one.

So plenty more pics to come, I can only get better I suppose! Damn this stuff is addictive!

Thanks guys.

There will be plenty of variations of the first shot in a few months - I'll be moving to a house just 5 mins walk from that very spot! I might actually do a series of shots from there with tide in, tide out, morning light, sunset, storm, brilliant sunlight etc, to capture the all different moods of the one location.

Something to think about anyway...

That really is a great idea... it would also look amazing as a framed set. Congrats on the new digs too. Sounds like you will be in a fabulous location!

All lovely pics, and I agree with everyone about the 1st one. It's really awesome. It looks like it could be used as some production company logo, or like something you'd see on the wall at a doctor's office. Only thing that's missing is a lightning bolt. :p For some reason I keep expecting to see one in that shot.

Also looking forward to the variations of that location. Does it noticably change during the seasons? If so, you could do seasonal shots as well.

You've made some great images there- hard to believe you're just getting comfortable with the camera! Keep up the good work.

I'd like to see more castles with this lens (without the flowers) :)

Gaza there will be plenty of castle pics to come. I'm going to concentrate on all things scottish over the next few years before i move back home to Brisbane, and some of the castles here are just amazing. stay tuned!

HDR - I'm really keen to perfect this but my first attempt was a complete flop so I opted for blending two pics manually as i did on the first image. Definitely going to give it a proper go once I get a decent tripod.

Once again thanks for all the positive feedback guys!
