View Full Version : Cheap wireless flash setups?

Simple question (I hope). What are some cheap camera/lighting-setups in order to go wireless flash?

As an example, my ideal setup would be: 1 D-SLR under $1,000 (cheaper is better), and at least 2 external wireless flashes (such as Nikon Speedlights).

Feel free to recommend more expensive cameras/lights if you feel they're more worth it than remaining cheap, for someone on a budget.

This is a really hard setup to figure out on my own, what with having to weigh the pros and cons of so many cameras with different prices. It's like physics - trying to weigh a huge combination of things in order to figure out how to get the most bang for the buck.

you mentioned Nikon speed lights, if your going to be really serious with wireless flashes, the SB800 is the way to go.

I throw this out there, I picked a pair of these slave flashes from Ritz camera (wolf, camera world, kitz camera all the same) and they don't use any fancy protacols, jsut have a light sensor. so your cam's flash signals its flash

it may seem cheesey but go check them out, they are $20 each, use AAA and will work with any camera reguardless of brand or model. put your money into your camera/lenses and save up for some SB800's

Thanks. Really helpful. :)

My only concern is that I will usually not want to fire my camera's flash right onto the subject - I'll want the slaves to do the lighting work on their own. So, will they still be triggered if I point the camera's flash at the ceiling or floor, or something, so as not to blast my subject head-on?

Thanks.
