I have often wondered: What would give me what I want in a modern DSLR lens? The ancient DSLR lens are now … imagine, two years old! How time flies, huh?

After considering the myriad of requests from the past year on DCRP, I think I have come up with some things that might tickle everyone …

How about:

An AF 18-300mm f/2.8-5.6 super lens?

Not only would this be one heavy lens (approximately 60 oz.), but it would cover just about all the bases in one package.

I thought about the Sigma 50-500mm f/4-6.3 EX DG HSM, but it lacked the low end. When placed on a APS-C sensor body … the DCF takes it straight to 80-800mm. That’s telephoto all day long. A bit too long for practical use.

With an 18-300mm on the same camera body, we effectively get 28-480mm. Now, we’re talking. Wide-angle glass coupled directly to long telephoto. Add image stabilization to a lens like this and it is just about all anyone would need, in their daily diet.

That’s #1

The next lens … yeah, an AF 10-30mm f/1.8 – this would be the perfect indoor lens for just about everyone. Again, a heavy lens do to its nearly 108 degrees of light collection capability on the wide end and the 48 degree width on the tight end.

On a APS-C sensor camera, it effectively becomes 16-48mm. It has overlap for your super lens, so you do not have to change as often. That keeps your camera cleaner, inside.

Anyway, this is my idea of the “two lens” bag. Truly, anything else would be novelty, at that point.

Comments? Hey you ... put that finger down. Wow, another tough crowd.

Fantasy lens for me Nikon 18-70 2.8vr,
The fantasy part kicks in when I want next to zero barrel distortion, and
it be remotely affordable <$1200.

Don, you did see this monster didn't you. 200-500mm 2.8 and at Only 33lbs!

Yeah, I did. I wasn't really considering anything quite that novel. My TAMRON AF200-500mm f/5-6.3 weighs about 43 oz (2lbs, 11 oz), but it is a daylight only lens, that's for sure. It offers no bokeh to speak off, but that f/2.8 ... that'll probably pick 'em out pretty good, in a crowd ... that is if you can get your tank support stand turned fast enough.

Now that support looks like it'll hold the forthcoming Canon 10 - 1000 f1.2 lens.

I'd really like to see a canon 18-200 IS design or an updated 28-135 IS.

If canon can make the 70-300 that good they aught to be able to improve some older or other glass makers designs.

I just wish Nikon would get off their asses and start putting AF-S motors in their standard lenses. At least make an attempt to compete with Canon in this department. Oh and dont change the pricing. The Canon equivalent already has a USM motor in it and its selling for the same price point as Nikon's standard AF lens.
