This is a trick to make your Nikon D50 shoot faster than 1/500 seconds when using SB600. It's specially dedicated to those Nikonians that love to go beyond what is described on the user's manual :D

McGyver's, use at your own risk !! ;) Be careful

The intention here is not to start a huge debate on flash sync or what is required to shoot jedi lightsabers in the dark as I have seen threads around the internet...be cool, it's just a trick ! Love or leave it

Good luck to who ever decides to try this. I'd be very careful of shortening something out or causing something to burn out. Not a good idea.

I won't violate my warranty, but I would like to hear from anyone who has already tried it.

This is actually nothing new. I heard about someone doing the exact same thing with a third party flash..I believe it was a Metz (I forget the model) that presumably doesn't have these sync pins the SB 600 has.
I don't think there's any real danger shorting out the camera doing this, since all you're doing is covering up certain contacts that are used for this feature.

I gave it a whirl tonight, and while it does "work" it does have limitations. I can't wake up my SB-800 from sleep mode, it won't display the camera's aperture on the lcd display and the auto-focus assist won't activate on the flash.

So what kind of pictures can this yield? IE what's the point?

You can freeze motion much more effectively with a shutter speed faster than 1/500. You can also use your flash outdoors in sunlight without having the limitations of smaller apertures. But like I said before, it's definitely not a perfect solution.

Take a look at this. Using same amount of water but different speeds
