First of all my budget is $800 currently but I would like to see input on anything under $900. I need this camera for a class I will be taking at college. The description is as follows.

Examines the historical, conceptual, and practical developments of the art of photography as embodied in the use of digital image-making technologies. Students must have their own digital camera with manual exposure control and a minimum image size of 5.0 MP, a computer capable of handling image files, and a color printer. Lab fee.

I was told that either the canon xti or canon 20D would be a good choice by a family friend, but would also like some input from other people as well.

After the class I will be using it to take action shots for the boxing club I am in and other sports as well. As long is it covers that description I would like to see anything that might be a good choice.

Sounds like a wise family friend. The Canon XTi with the 18-55mm kit lens would give you all you needed for the class and be an excellent camera to grow with. The 30D (20D replacement) is a little out of you price range and bit of overkill for a college class.

Some may try to dissuade you from the kit lens, but for the cost and benefits it is a good lens. And you can always sell it later when you buy better lenses for your camera.
